INTERVIEW: Be Charlotte

How have you been?

Great thanks. It’s been a busy start to 2017.

Can you talk to us more about your single OneDrop?

It was written on loop pedal, starting off with beat boxing and vocal harmonies. I then added in a spoken word part and the main melody. It remained as just a sort of loop pedal thing for a whole, but eventually I went into the studio and built it up with some live instruments and some digital stuff.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write it?

I wrote it after playing a solo gig that didn’t go very well. In a run of gigs that had built up to make me feel like that and I realised I had to make some changes in order to improve. These difficult situations help you to understand how to do things.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I don’t think so, not yet anyway. I’ve got some really cool ideas. So maybe at some point we will get round to that.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was a little bit different with OneDrop as the majority of the song was written on loop pedal and then I put it into ableton and arranged it from there. Later I went in the studio with Marcus McKay and started to flesh it out a bit more.

What was it like to work with Marcus McKay and how did that relationship develop?

I really enjoy working with him. He really gets the music and realises how important it is to let my ideas develop.

Does this new single mean we can expect new material?

Yes, we will put out some more singles this year and hopefully continue touring in all the nice places we’ve been able to visit.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Nope. We will take things as they come.

How unorthodox would the approach to this record be?

I guess it’s different from the rest of my songs as One Drop started its life on loop pedal and it’s just progressed with a really live feel.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, we are doing our first Scottish tour in February..going to Texas in March and then doing some shows in Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool. We will be doing some festivals in Europe too so it’s going to be a busy year.

What else is happening next in Be Charlotte world?

We are just about to start on production rehearsals for adding in new elements to the live show. We have some ambitious new elements and hoping to get that across for the tour in February.
