Hi Christina, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Runnin’ Away”?
I work way, way too much. Runnin’ Away is my reminder to myself to balance it out, whether it’s making time for yoga or meditation or taking a day trip… or a full on vacation. haha.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Whenever I lock myself in recording studios for too long, I get this itchy feeling to have the sun or rain on my face again.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes! The video is here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTcMRV55Yaw&feature=youtu.be
The director, Brianne Nord-Stewart, came to stay with me in Switzerland for two weeks while we shot this music video. She stayed on my farm and we would swim in Lake Zurich everyday. It was a unique experience to creatively collaborate with Brianne while spending so much time together. I believe she clearly understands me as an artist because of this. Pieces of our time together inspired various parts of the video. For example, we met a man at the lake one day who collected vintage cars and allowed us to use one for a few shots. I was also living with a sheep on the farm who makes a cameo in the video as well.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote 100 songs for this record over a 2 year period, then we chose 10! Warne Livesey produced the record in his studio in Toronto. It was so great to work with Warne, he can really make anything possible, he’s so free in his work.
How has Switzerland influence your music?
I think traveling and meeting new people is always an inspiration for me. I love being in both Canada and Switzerland and traveling between the two places. Switzerland is such a beautiful place to get lost in, all of the alps and alp culture where I lose my mind in beauty. It’s also very close to the rest of Europe, you can be anywhere in just a few hours. Canada is wide and full of crazy nature. I’m lucky af.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Real life, just living and traveling and nature. I was also able to write songs with a few very amazing humans, that was very inspiring.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! Playing live is the greatest. I’ll be on the road in summer and fall.
What else is happening next in Rykka’s world?
Songwriting daily, we are releasing a remix EP very soon and also getting ready for more live shows!
