INTERVIEW: Chinese Man
Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Pretty busy these days!!! We just finish the album but we are working hard on the new live show right now!
Can you talk to us more about your latest singles “Wolf” & “Escape”? The music and video (in the case of “Escape”)
I think both of these tracks are really in the Chinese Man style of music, this kind of instrumental hip hop track with some strange structure and arrangements are the kind of tracks we started produce since the beginning. For the Escape video big up to Fred and Annabelle who always find some crazy ideas to illustrate our tracks.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write those particular songs? Which are?
Honestly we really try to “escape” from reality when we produce music so it was more to forget all sad events that happen around us that we make music.
Any plans to release a video for “Wolf”?
Yes we are working on it!
Let’s focus now on the new album Shikantaza – what’s the story behind such a great title?
We really ask ourselves if the title was not too hard to say and to remember, but the word was saying exactly the kind of mood we were when produce the album so we keep it. we were searching a name for the track at the beginning, we had this crazy track with japans voices so we start some searching some Zen words and we find Shikantaza.
How/where was the recording and writing process?
We took almost two years to produce the album. We really take time to try some stuff with musicians and with production so it was a long process but we were ^pretty Zen during the production.
You brought some special guests – how was the selection process? The bonds between the band and those artists, are more in a friendship or a professional way?
It depends; we have some friends on the album like Youthstar, Taiwan and ASM. We have some crazy MC that we love for a long time like RA and some new artist like Mariama or Dillon Cooper. But with everybody we really had great collaborations.
What did they bring up to the table this time? Are any of them going with the band when performing?
We will be with Youthstar and ASM on the tour and Taiwan will come for few shows we hope.
How has Buddhism influenced this record? Could you tell us about those Chinese traditional music and sounds that appear throughout the album?
I think the album talks more about meditation and the Zen philosophy; we are not so much into Buddhism that’s why Shikantaza was a perfect name!
Any plans to hit the road during 2017 introducing the new LP? How would be the proposal on the stage?
On the stage we have a lot of videos and lights so the show is gonna be really immersive. It’s gonna be really eclectic: hip hop / dub / drum and bass etc…
What else is happening next in Chinese Man’s world?
A Lot of GIGS J
