Gang of Youths Premiere New Single “What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?”, Playing NYC Residency This Month

Sydney, Australia band Gang of Youths have released their latest single “What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?” The track, recorded in Sydney and mixed in New York by Peter Katis, was premiered via Stereogum earlier today.

Frontman Dave Le’aupepe spoke about the inspiration for the track saying, “I was raised under a hybrid version of Evangelical Christianity which attempts to reconcile mainline Judaism with conventional Christendom and synthesize the two- most of the language and I suppose, lexical quirks associated with biblical imagery in “WCIDITFGO?” are in many ways, attempting to level these questions to the big Other – the Lacan Other, maybe. Or maybe the god presented to me as a kid with whom I’ve still yet to find much compatibility or solidarity but for some fucking reason I’m still attempting to grapple with, or make excuses for. The image of fire is a consistent motif in Christianity, and aside from its overuse as a lyrical trope in CCM and it’s myriad associations in Christine doctrine, it’s supposed to be synonymous with things like god’s light, his wrath, his fucking I don’t know, ability to make excellent s’mores?”

The band are also excited to announce that they’ll be playing NYC every remaining Monday of the month. Fans will be able to catch their electric live show at Mercury Lounge on February 13th and 20th and then again at Rough Trade on the 27th.

“What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?” will be available to purchase this Friday, February 10th via the band’s own label Mosey Recordings. Stay tuned for more exciting news on Gang of Youths’ forthcoming second album.
