INTERVIEW: Nerd Soul Artist Nick Blaemire

Hi Nick, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m okay! The world is a crazy place to live at the moment, but it makes making music all the more cathartic, and important.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Evaporate”?

Living in New York, sometimes it can get claustrophobic with all the hustle swirling around you, and the opinions that go with it. It’d be nice to disappear into the clouds with the one you love where no one can bother you. That’s what this song is trying to capture, that feeling of escape.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

The long term wear and tear of living in New York for a decade.

Any plans to release a music video for the single?

We actually just released a very trippy lyric video with some 3D mapping in it that is absolutely insane, and cathartic to look at. It really matches the vibe of the song.

The single comes off your new EP The Ampersand EP – what’s the story behind the title?

The EP’s about collaboration — between artists, lovers, friends, substances, the world, and parts of yourself, and how you’re never really alone, cause one of those things is always around.

How was the recording and writing process?

I miss it so much. I woke up thinking about it every day, and fell asleep thinking about it at night. It was a fucking blast — the musicians were just the loveliest, funniest, most effortlessly talented people — and Chris and Packy, the guys I produced it with, are true miracle makers. They helped me manifest the sounds I was hearing in my head, and then take them to a level I always dreamed about but never have done without them.

How has your acting influence your music and the other way around?

I think because I come from the theater background, there’s a bit of theatricality in these songs: a grandness, a whimsy, and a sort of thematic arc to the EP. And in terms of how music affects my acting work — it’s definitely helped me hone my radar for honesty. I know when I mean what I’m saying, or singing, or writing, and I think (hope) I’m getting better at following that instinct.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I just got married this past year, and a lot of these songs are about my wife, Ana, as well as about living in modern society, and trying to get some perspective on, and from, that.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m hoping to tour this year, getting the deets together now. But, I’m playing Rockwood on Sat 2/4 @ 8 in NYC, so come to that first!

What else is happening next in Nick Blaemire’s world?

A lot. I’m writing a movie that is supposed to start shooting this summer, I’m pitching a couple TV shows (one of which has a major music component), auditioning for various acting projects, and then promoting this EP. It’s a full plate, but I’m definitely never bored, and that’s the way I like it.
