Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Fade”?
Fade is one of those songs that we re-wrote a few times until it finally felt right. Lyrically, it’s about the odd feeling of nostalgia you sometimes get visiting somewhere you haven’t been in a long time.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
A couple years ago I went home to visit my family and drove to the other side of town to see some sights from my childhood. It’s amazing how just physically standing in a certain spot can trigger so many vivid feelings.
Any plans to release a music video for the song?
We’re hoping to release another video this year but we aren’t sure yet if it would be this song or another one.
The single comes off your new album No Motives- what’s the story behind the title?
The word ‘motive’ has a negative connotation here as something that is done for personal gain. We didn’t have any angles or motives going into writing these songs. No strategies or themes or gimmicks. Just an honest representation of us.
How was the recording and writing process?
We started with around 30 song ideas and narrowed it down to these before recording. The drums and vocals were done in California, we recorded the rest at home, and Beau Burchell mixed the album. It was a long process. It wasn’t ideal, but we’re happy how the record turned out.
What personal experiences did you get to explore on this material?
Most of the lyrics are about being honest with yourself even when it’s not the easiest thing to do.
How are you preparing for your upcoming tour?
Just making sure all our gear is ready to go and that we are ready to incorporate some new songs into our set.
What are you looking forward the most?
Playing some cities we’ve never been to!
Would you guys be changing the set on every date?
We’ll probably change out a couple songs every night.
Any plans to do some live collaboration with Alteras?
We hadn’t planned on it but who knows what could happen. We’re excited to hit the road with them.
What else is happening next in Thieves’ world?
Playing more shows and writing more songs. We’re just excited to play these new songs from No Motive!
