INTERVIEW: James Kennedy

Hi James, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey guys, thanks for having me! Pretty awesome thanks! How are you?

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Unconditional”?

Sure! It’s all about the unconditional Love that all of us have for someone, whether it’s our family, a partner, a friend or whoever & it’s kind of a tribute to that bond – in a realistic, non cheesy way ha ha

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I think so. I had a bit of a meltdown last year after years of living quite a one dimensional life of being in a band – touring, studio, touring etc – and in that moment, I started to become quite aware of the other things in life that all of us are blessed with but often take for granted. So ironically, I ended up back in the Studio writing about it!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Totally! It’s coming out on Feb 6th, same day as the Single and features real life families & couples from across South Wales in their homes. It’s a good ‘un – I can’t wait for people to see/hear it!

Why naming the album after this track in particular?

I called the album ‘Home’ because I felt that writing the album acted as a kind of journal of my journey at that time and a form of self exploration. I felt that after years of being elsewhere (literally and metaphorically), I had finally come ‘Home’.

How was the recording and writing process?

Fun & easy actually. I’d never really intended on making an album, it just kind of happeneded so I didn’t find myself feeling any of the pressures that I usually do. The lyrics came easily as they were just a literal expression of how I was feeling & the songs just seemed to flow. The whole album was written. recorded, mixed & mastered within a few months! I recorded it all at home & at a Studio in Newport that I have access to. I played all the instruments & did all of the Production so it was a real quick & straight forward process – I will definitely be incorporating some of that ethos on my next album!

How did this album serve as a therapy?

It’s odd becasue I realised how important song writing is to me as one of my natural forms of expression. I was supposed to be taking some AWAY from Music to reflect on my life & figure some things out – but without even being aware that I was doing it, I was channeling it all into songs. The album has light & dark on it and is a true reflection of that whole period of my life – for me, I can listen to it & remember exactly which life moments I’m talking about in each song.

What aspect of your past touring life did you get to explore on this material?

Quite a few actually ha ha. There’s a song called ‘Entertainer’ which is directly about that – the whole mindf*** of being on stage one minute, up in lights and then in a quiet hotel the next, on your own. It’s a bizarre thing and ends up often leaving you feeling quite deflated. Oh and a song called ‘Forbidden’ which is about some of the interesting female characters I’ve met on this particular journey 😉

Any plans to hit the road?

Not as yet. At the moment the only live performances I’m doing are through my Pledge Campaign at : http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/jameskennedy. I’m doing private house concerts & Skype Concerts rather than booking a series of shows and it’s great fun! A tour is definitely something I’ll think about perhaps once the album is out but for now I’m enjoying ‘Home’ life – no pun intended haha!

What else is happening next in James Kennedy’s world?

Loads! I’ve got another few music videos and singles lined up, which are super exciting – as well as some live videos in the pipeline. There’s some Radio & TV spots coming up & Obviously the Pledge Campaign is still running for a few weeks so thats mega exciting too. The next few months will revolve around promoting the album & after that, I guess we’ll see what happens! Knowing me, I’ll probably end up on the road and new saga’s will find their way into new songs ha ha.
