INTERVIEW: DJ William Reed

Hi William, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you so much. I’m glad to be here.

I’ve been really great. 2017 has been awesome so far. I’ve just returned from abroad where I was DJ’ing in Paris and London.

How did your initial love for Electronica and EDM music started?

When I was 12 we moved to Germany for the second time. Here I would attend middle school and high school. All of my teenage years essentially.

It was there growing up outside Frankfurt in the mid 90’s where I was really turned on to electronic music–Aphex Twin, Plastikman, Orbital, Der Dritte Raum, General Levy, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Future Sound of London, The Prodigy, Moby, Underworld, Shy FX, UK Apache, etc.

On the weekends I would hit all the local record shops and pine through the electronic bins. Back then we had IDM and EBM but this was long before America coined EDM.

This paved the way to acid house, techno–such as Sven Vath & Cocoon, Tresor, Adam Beyer, et al, as well as early trance music. The rest is history.

You have influenced by a wide range of genres too – do you always try to somewhat combine them or how do all of those influences come together?

I do, absolutely every time. Unless I’m hired to do a strictly house or techno set, I’ll mix it up. I make it a point to never stay in one gear for too long.

Especially for sets when I play four or five hours straight I like to weave in and out of various genres spanning multiple decades. Whether it’s Funk & boogie, disco, classic rock, punk, French pop, old school and underground hip hop and even guilty pleasures.

Do you tend to take a different approach depending on the band or artist you are sharing the list than when you are doing your own set?

Absolutely. I don’t want to sound exactly like the other DJ or band I may be opening up for or playing with. For example when I open up for Pet Shop Boys I tend to shy away from playing 80’s and New Wave and instead dig into my house, disco and indie-dance crates. This way there is a clear separation between band and DJ and hopefully I’m exposing their fanbase to something new. I apply this approach to most concerts I open up for as a DJ whether they’re rock, Indie or electronic bands.

Following my last question, what things you take in mind at the time of creating a set for a particular venue?

There’s a few things I’ll consider and they can include headlining artist, venue, demographic, age range, the city I’m playing in. I also never pre-plan sets. That’s a big mistake because you never know what to expect and have to be ready to go with the flow.

What role does Germany play in your music?

It was while living in Germany that I was first exposed to Brit Pop, Trip Hop, House, Trance, Techno, Ambient and Punk. So I’d say it plays a huge role. I wouldn’t be who I am today if not for that experience.

Any plans to hit the road?

I travel at every opportunity. I’ve just returned from gigging in Paris and London. Two of my favorite cities. I’m back in LA for a bit working on a few projects and then I’ll be heading out again in the spring time.

What else is happening next in William Reed’s world?

I’m working on my album that I started last year, I host and produce a weekly radio show on Dash Radio and I have a few events coming up that I’m really excited about including my annual Academy Awards after party which I’m hosting at Bar Marmont this year. Other than that I have a super secret new project in the works that we’re pitching a pilot for.
