INTERVIEW: SØF

Hi Sofia, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS! Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me about my upcoming single, “Ghosts.” I’ve been great, and I’m super appreciative of your time!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Ghosts”?

“Ghosts” is a song I wrote about letting go of the past, and specifically former flames who no longer have a place in my life. The song is upbeat and even a little funky, and my favorite part has to be the horns!

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

About two summers ago, I was battling some inner demons and focusing so much of my energy on the past and negative experiences that had long expired. I was holding grudges and allowing previous romantic relationships to impact my current one. I sat down to write one day, and it hit me hard that I can’t change what’s already happened, so it’s best that I move on from my ghosts and allow myself to be happy.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

At the moment I don’t have a music video planned for this particular single, but I do want to release a music video for another song- perhaps even several- so keep your eyes peeled!

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process was absolutely seamless. I knocked it out in under three hours and was so eager for people to hear it that I performed it at my next gig the following week.

Recording it was a different case entirely. I worked with Jerry Ramos of Mercury Recording Studio in Rahway, NJ and we spent so many sessions tweaking every tiny detail so it would sound absolutely perfect. He truly brought the song to life in a way that I simply couldn’t on just an acoustic guitar. The finished song is so big now with guitars, drums, bass, keys and a horns section! I even had my percussionist, Megan Doucette, come in and record cajon on the track.

Has your old sound changed with this new moniker – what can old fans expect from this new project, musically speaking?

My old sound was super bubblegum pop and Disney. At the time, it definitely suited me. I was this flowery, soft-spoken sixteen-year-old girl who wanted to sing about the boys I liked in high school. I hadn’t really found my edge. After some trials and tribulations- both in my musical career and my personal life- I started to notice that my songwriting had a bit of sass to it, and I wanted to explore that more. I really had to sit down and reflect on what kind of artist I wanted to be and how I wanted to portray myself. I didn’t want to be sweet and dainty anymore- I wanted to be unapologetic and spunky. I wanted my music to be upbeat and exciting, and I wanted to take some risks too. This new project really showcases all of that and my old fans can expect to hear some really fun and catchy new songs.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are covering someone else’s song than when you are writing your own material?

One of my favorite things to do with covers is to think of them as brand new songs that I’m writing. Covering a song and making it sound exactly like the original version is easy; I think the challenge lays in transforming it to match your own personal style. With every cover I perform I like to put my own little SØF twist on it, and it just makes it so much more fun to sing too.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes indeed! I have a whole year of releases planned, and right now I can tell you that February will be seeing the release of my second single, “Infinity,” and “Shame on Me” is my third single coming in March. I spent the past year and a half working tirelessly on these songs, and I’m extremely excited for everyone to hear them!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’m sticking to strictly singles this year, so I don’t have any kind of album in mind, but I can tell you that “Ghosts” will be released on Monday, January 30th on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon and many more digital sites!

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! At the moment I’m looking to book dates at some bigger venues with a full band backing me, so I’ll definitely announce any major show dates in the future! In the meantime, I’ve been excitedly booking my trip to California to attend industry legend Judy Stakee’s exclusive songwriting retreat! Travelling outside of the East Coast is a major step that I’ll be taking this year.

What else is happening next in SØF’s world?

Every Monday at 7 pm, I post a new “SØF Music Monday”- a series I created where I upload brand new musical content including live performances, Q&A’s, pre-recorded covers, and stripped down originals- so watch out for those!

In addition to my single releases I have some side projects planned, but I can’t give too much away yet! Fans can follow my website, sofmusic.com, and Facebook page (facebook.com/sofmusicofficial) to stay updated on all of my musical announcements!
