INTERVIEW: KEV

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! Thank you very much! We’re good, trying to survive the cold winter here in Sweden, but hopefully spring comes soon.

Can you talk to us more about the lead track from your EP “Moments”?

’Moments’ is one of the very first songs that we ever wrote as KEV. It’s a track with a lot of energy and tells a story about feeling unbeatable and to make something out of your moments – together. The track is an up-tempo pop song with a cool, special drop. You’ll need to hear it to understand!

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Maybe not one particular event, but many events together. I’ve been young, I’ve been drunk and I’ve been in love. All those feelings together can make a lot of songs and lyrics that people relate to.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We did release a video, not a typical ”music video” but more or less like a motivation movie, with the track as inspiration. It would be fun to make a real music video for ’Moments’. We love to make movies and other creative things to go with our tracks, to expand it and also give it more dignity.

The single comes off your EP Chapter X – what’s the story behind the title?

Our EP ’Chapter X’ is the first EP we’ve ever released as KEV. We wanted to have a title that could mean everything. For us ‘Chapter X’ is a beginning, our first EP and also a step in the right direction. If you see our journey as a book, ’Chapter X’ is the first couple of pages.

How was the recording and writing process?

Fast but also really slow! We can make a demo version of a song very fast, almost two on one day sometimes but when it comes to recording the final vocals or mixing, we make these very carefully. These were our first songs and the first project we released, so we’ve learned a lot since then. Overall the writing process is nice. We have fun together and everybody brings something to the table. It’s a slow/ fast, process.

How has Sweden influenced you musically?

Sweden is a pop country and we have a lot of amazing history when it comes to big artists from Sweden. What most of them have in common is the melancholy, which we also have in our tracks. I think also when you have the weather and different landscapes that we have got, it’s easy to make songs in many different moods. It’s easier to write a sad song while looking out on a huge field and seeing the rain on the window – and the other way around, of course.

What would you say makes the Swedish scene so unique?

Again, I think the melancholy in the happy pop songs. Swedish pop is unique overall I think. You can almost hear when it’s a Swedish composer or songwriter in the sounds…

What emotions were you guys chasing after with this record?

While making the record, we didn’t think so much at it – but when we had the four songs we wanted to release, we noticed that the songs had much more in common. ‘Hometown’, ‘Moments’ and ‘Visionary’ have most in common here, in the way that the songs are about people who struggle for something better and trying to make their way up to something great, together. The melancholy is very present in these tracks, but there is also a light of hope in the songs. So, while listening to the record I think you’ll have a lot of emotions – and that’s what we want to do with our music, we want people to feel.

What aspect of love and friendship did you get to explore on this particular material?

All the songs we write are based from life. Even though it ain’t always my story, we can tell someone else’s.

Any plans to hit the road?

Absolutely, it’s something that we discuss and are thinking about all the time. Will be amazing to come out and play for everyone, when we do. The live part is a big thing for KEV.

What else is happening next in KEV’s world?

Right now, we’re just keep on doing new music. We want to release more music very soon and also of course, continue with spreading the word on this ‘Chapter X’ release. Hopefully, soon enough, we will be able to hit the road and play for people, that would be great.
