-I’ve been great, thank you! It’s good to be back.
Can you talk to us more about your song “She’s Got Everything”?
-Sure! The song itself was written a few years ago, and was the 2nd song I had decided to put on the original album, “Off The Vine.” – In listening to the songs off that record, I chose “She’s Got Everything” to record acoustically because I think the words speak more when the song is stripped down. The song describes a girl that commands the attention of others by the way she carries herself. I’m speaking out loud about her, but she can’t hear me.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
-I’ve always been captivated and inspired by confident people. I love when someone can walk into a room and just by being his/herself draw the attention of a crowd. I wanted to write about it – because I think in each person’s own way, they should all search for that one thing that makes them feel powerful.
Any plans to release a video for the song?
-Yes! I will be releasing an acoustic video each week leading up to the end of the month. They will be available on Vevo and YouTube starting Monday, Jan. 16th
The track comes off your new album Off The Vine – what’s the story behind the title?
-I spent a lot of time trying to find a name that would best suit the album. I found it really difficult, because I felt the need to have it be “perfect.” Instead, I chose to pick something that represented where I was in my life at the time. Rather than allow myself to get caught up in the thralls of trends & conformity, I needed to stop holding on to what I “thought” I should do…and just allow myself to let go. The expression “die on the vine” means to fail without the necessary means to succeed….every day I choose to not let doubts get in the way of my success
How was the recording and writing process for this album?
-SO much fun. This was the first time I collaborated with someone else during the writing process. It was such a fun experience to have already written material, and hear the songs in a new light. Collaborating with my guitarist Todd McCool helped show a new aspect of these tracks, and my artistry as a whole.
What drew you to record a stripped down version of this record?
-Subconsciously, I think I wanted the world to see a different side of my artistry. Having studied all different types of music, I appreciate when songs can be stripped down and exposed in their most raw form. I didn’t write these songs with the intention of doing that – it just sort of happened. And I’m really glad it did.
What approach were you seeking with this material?
-Simplicity. I think often times songs can become over-saturated and lose their meaning due to over-production. A lot of my music has deeper lyrical meaning & I think the acoustic and simple versions help show that.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
-I draw from my own experiences, experiences I’m yet to have but would like to have, and even dreams. Music is unique in the fact that you can express things in a way you wouldn’t be able to speak them. Sometimes I will sit down and have a specific topic in mind, but other times I will just go into a session with an open mind, and let the music decide what it wants to be.
Any plans to hit the road?
-I’d love to! There are currently no plans to travel outside of the U.S, but I will be planning a tour sometime this year. All updates about that can be found by subscribing to my newsletter at codyjaymusic.com
