Happy to have survived 2016, an undisputed shitty year that we are all looking to put to bed. We lost our favorite rebel princess, Ziggy Stardust, and Prince.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Smoke Out of the Window”?
“Smoke Out the Window” is our first single off our new mixtape, We Sell Drugs. We felt like we needed a release having been so close to each other on tour, and this song came to be our outlet. Being constantly together, sometimes we needed a reminder to just roll down and blow the smoke out the window. “Smoke out the window” is a lyric used literally and as a metaphor to shedding the bullshit!
How was the film experience?
Filming was great! We got to joy ride and then demolish a cab that we bought off Craigslist. Gavin was skateboarding through bank buildings and Trump Tower in NYC. A security guard at Trump Tower who must have been an ex-Marine or something–a real hero–ran after Gavin, grabbed him and punched him in the throat. Then he chased Gavin down the street and into Battery Park.
The single comes off your new album We Sell Drugs – what’s the story behind the title?
The mixtape title is the title of one of the songs. It is a song that talks about drugs in wealthy communities like yacht clubs, private schools and suburbs. If you grew up in America watching main stream media, you have seen how drug dealers and drug deals are stigmatized to one community. We thought it would be fun to reverse the stereotype.
How was the recording and writing process?
We wrote this over the last two years. There is a lot of experimentation with production and vocals. We wanted to call it a mixtape instead of an album because we felt it was an era of experimentation.
What else is happening next in Tribe Society’s world?
We’re dropping our mixtape, We Sell Drugs, in the beginning of 2017, and we’re looking forward to more surprises during the year.
