INTERVIEW: Sarah Darling

Hi Sarah, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having me!  I’ve been doing very well! Excited about 2017 and a brand new record. There’s nothing better than putting out new music.  It’s been a couple years since I’ve put something out there.

Can you talk to us more about your upcoming single “Halley’s Comet”?

“Halley’s comet” is the most personal song on my record.   It’s really captures the dreamer in all of us, and remembering why we love our passions.  It’s about finding your place to shine in the big beautiful universe.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wrote it after leaving a label deal and not knowing where my career was going to take me.  I think the initial change was scary, but it’s actually been the greatest gift I’ve ever received.  It has lead me to making something beautiful.

Tell us about the upcoming video for the song.

I wanted to take people straight up to the stars and do something different with this video.  When I was dreaming up the video, all I could think about was an animation.  That’s my hint!

The single comes off your new album Dream Country, which serves as a follow up to your 2012 EP, Home To Me. What have you been up to since this last album was released?

Since my last EP, I have been diving into making “Dream Country.” I had always wanted to make a project that was cinematic and full of strings.  It’s a bit different then my last album, but that’s what’s wonderful about artistry.  I write about where I am at that particular time in my life.  It’s an honest look into the world I love and songs that mean something to me. I’m really excited for my fans to hear it. I feel like I found my voice over the last two years.  The tracks really capture a beauty of the world.

What’s the story behind the title?

The title “Dream Country” happened while I was making the album at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville. I had a friend come in to listen, and he asked what the sound was.  He described as country meets something else, and Dream Country popped out of my mouth.  It’s stuck ever since.

How was the recording and writing process?

Writing and recording for this was an amazing experience.  I was like a kid the whole time! This was the first time I made something from the ground up, every detail.  It has made me quite attached to the songs and the experiences I had in the studio.  It was pure magic! The songs are little stories that were happening in my life during that time.  I know the dreamer will get it.

How has Nashville influenced you as an artist?

Nashville has changed my life.  I wouldn’t be doing anything I’m doing now without all the opportunities of moving here.  It’s this magical town full of talent.  I want to be around that everyday!

Besides Americana and Country – did you intended to explore other styles on this record?

I explored so much on this record.  You will hear country, pop, folk, americana, and even a little bit of a jazz feel.  I think every artist should explore.

What aspect of dreams and romance did you get to explore in this material?

Oh my goodness, all I can think about is my track “Montmartre” written about my love affair with Paris.  It doesn’t get any more romantic than this! It takes you straight to a little cafe on a cobblestone street.

Any plans to hit the road?

This Spring I will be hitting the road.  Keep checking my website for added dates!

What else is happening next in Sarah Darling’s world?

I try to plan a trip to a place I’ve never been each year! Since it’s January, I’m making plans for amazing places to go stargaze this summer.  I’m thinking Arches National Park in Utah.  So besides promoting my album, you will see me exploring new lands!
