INTERVIEW: Kelly Sirko

Hi Kelly, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! Thanks and I’ve been doing great!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “If You Were Awake”?

This is my first release since I changed my stage name, and it’s definitely more of an alternative style than my previous material. Someone changing in personality and suddenly blowing you off or treating you badly while they’re not aware of how they’ve changed is compared to them sleeping and dreaming and not being aware of what’s happening in reality. Fun fact, the idea popped into my head while binge-watching the video for “If I Were In Your Shoes” by You Me At Six.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Actually, unlike most of my other music, this wasn’t written by any particular event or person. I had the idea for the song during my freshman year of college and back then it was loosely about someone I knew who was frustrating me a bit with the way they’ve been acting, but I re-wrote it a couple years later and at that point I wasn’t writing about anyone in particular. It’s kind of a general anthem for anyone who has ever dealt with someone acting weirdly or blowing them off.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Possibly. If I do end up doing a video, it probably won’t be for a while until closer to when I’m ready to release an EP. Out of the songs I currently plan on using for my next EP, this one is definitely the one begging the most for a video. But I just joined a band called Cardinal (find us on Facebook at and we want to get recording and performing very soon so I’m probably not going to really focus on solo stuff for a while. I don’t want to release a solo EP within two months of the band’s EP haha. That’d be overkill. I’m still recording but it’s going be a little while before I release more.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process was long because I wrote the first (and terrible) version of the song about four years ago and then ended up re-writing it two years later. Then two years after THAT I finally went in to record it. The recording process was awesome cause I got to record a demo in the studio before recording the real thing, so I was really able to hear how I should be singing each line. I probably drove Chris and Steve (my producers) crazy because I kept wanting to re-record the verses, but in the end I think it came out sick!

What role does Boston play in your music?

I only moved here about 6 months ago. I grew up in New Jersey and went to school at Penn State, so I still haven’t experienced a ton of it. But I’ve met a handful of people in the scene here so far and finally successfully got a band together, which I’ve wanted to do for several years. I’ve tried multiple times throughout my life and somehow it always fell through. So right now things are working out wonderfully. I’m excited to see how things play out this year living here.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

Well, like I said, I just joined a band so I’m going to be focusing mostly on that for the time being until at least a few months after our EP comes out. Then maybe I’ll put out the solo EP. After that, who knows how often I’ll be putting out solo stuff… I guess it depends on where the band goes. I do plan on keeping the solo stuff going somewhat so I have an outlet for songs I’ve written that don’t sound like something the band would do. But there will eventually be a solo EP, yes. And there’s also music coming from my band in the meantime J

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Probably by the end of 2017 or early 2018. It depends on when I think I have enough songs and also on when we release the band’s EP, because I don’t want to put them out too close to each other. As far as titles, I’m not entirely sure yet. I’ve been thinking maybe of “Colors Will Fade,” which is a lyric from my song “Friction,” but maybe that’ll change. Who knows.

Any plans to hit the road?

I hope to tour at some point with my band, but we’re going to focus on playing local shows for the time being. Solo shows are probably going to stay local unless I somehow find out there’s demand somewhere else nearby…

What else is happening next in Kelly Sirko’s world?

Just having fun making more and more music and hoping some of it sticks J
