Hi Jetty, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey, thanks so much for having me! I’m doing ok. Recovering from a long and fast trip out west to California a few weeks ago. Four thousand miles plus on the road has definitely taken a toll, so I’m looking forward to a little time off during the holidays.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Queen of the Universe”?

Sure, it’s a bluesy, aggressive, sultry song about a fictional woman who tries to control and manipulate people around her.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Well, actually the vibe of the song started out as a joke. For some reason when I haven’t fully committed to a song in complete seriousness, sometimes it’s easier to write. Almost like just removing the expectation allows for creativity to flow through. Honestly, I heard Miranda Lambert’s voice in my head as I penned this. When I imagined someone singing this, I didn’t really have the sass factor that I wanted, so I told myself this was a song I was writing for someone else. The inspiration behind the song is about a dear friend’s personal drama with her in-laws. She was deeply hurt at some dirt that was being said about her, and I being the songwriter I am, jumped in to relieve some of the tension. I will never forget her face when I first played it for her.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I really hope so. When I was in high school I thought I wanted to produce music videos–I just need a good idea to make this one! My only request is that I have an all chick posse riding motorcycles.

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process for this one was pretty epic. I think I did maybe 3 takes, with the first and second one being pretty spot on. I was a little intimidated to sing this one–it’s a little more challenging than my other songs to sing, pace and pitch wise. My producer lit candles, and I actually had a photographer in the room with me to document the process. I laughed so hard when I got all the photos back–I was singing so passionately that my face looks a bit like I’m getting a tooth extraction.

How has Michigan influence you as an artist?

Michigan is my home. No matter where I go, my roots are here. Michigan has given me rest, and inspiration from the lakes to the forests, this state is where I recharge and remind myself of who I am, and where I want to go in life. This state is also where most of my family lives, and some of my dearest friends.

What role does influences such as Cat Power play in your music?

Oh Iove Cat Power! Her album The Greatest is an album that sonically and stylistically resonated and impacted me greatly. The warmth, the tones, the rasp… I remember hearing it and thinking if I made an album I’d want it to sound like this.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I am completely finished with my album-Can’t Curse The Free. I have ten new songs that I cannot wait to share with my long-time fans and the world.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I will be releasing two more singles before the album drops. On my 30th birthday (January 13th) I will be releasing the title track “Can’t Curse The Free” Then February 7th I’ll be releasing “Take Me To The Mountain” before the full album is available on the 17th.

Any plans to hit the road?

Always. We live full time in an Airstream travel trailer that we renovated, so we are essentially always on the road. I believe I will be heading south, somewhere warm come February!

What else is happening next in Jetty Rae’s world?

Hopefully I will be shooting some epic and awesome music videos in the spring! Other than that I am already fantasizing about finding time to write my next project.
