INTERVIEW: Cavegreen

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Eleanor: Good! We are excited to finally share our new songs with the world.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Witches Dreams”?

Gianluca:“Witches Dream” is an exhortation to explore and consider in earnest the deeper aspects of our human nature. These aspects are more relatable to the night, in that they are mysterious, elusive and not bound to the physicality of the world, but transcend it.

Eleanor: We wanted to express these ideas in energetic yet dreamy music – somethingthat you can dance to late at night, that wakes you up and gets your heart beating – while also invoking a feeling of dreaminess.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Gianluca:This song is inspired by the books of Florinda Donner. The books explore ancient healing practices and the training for specific states of awareness that were explored by mesoamerican cultures such as the Maya and the Toltec.

How was the film experience?

Eleanor: We make our own music videos, which are based in the landscape of the Pacific Northwest. We typically go out into nature without much planning and try out different ideas inspired by the moment.  Then a storyline comes together in the editing process.  The video for “Witches Dream”was really fun to make, both outdoors and in editing.  My favorite part was probably dancing on the beach at night.

The single comes off your new album Vita Lucida – what’s the story behind the title?

Gianluca: Vita Lucida can be read in Spanish, Italian, or Latin. Its translation in English is ‘shining life’or ‘life shines’. The title simply points to the idea that a greater reality beyond the physical encompasses all of life, and that inexplicably and mysteriously holds and connects the physical world together. In a positive, warm, and light way, drawing from different traditions, the songs are reminders of some of the possibilities opened up by this ancient belief: the connectivity of all things.

How was the recording and writing process?

Eleanor: Our writing process usually begins with lyrics from Gianluca and then I develop the music for them.  We started writing the songs for Vita Lucida about four years ago in 2012, and have developed and edited them up until this past spring.  We released early versions of some of the songs on our EP, Journey of Return in 2015.  I recorded, mixed, and produced the record from our home studio in Olympia, WA with Gianluca assisting in production.

What aspect of dreams and fantasy did you get to explore on this material?

Eleanor: This is a tricky question!  I think some would say our music is very much based on dreams, considering “Witches Dream”is about dreaming.  But with that song, for example, we’re trying to point out the “realness”of our dreaming potential – that there’s more than just the fantasy of it.  Musically, on the other hand, we definitely try to create dreamy and fantastical environments for these ideas to be expressed.

Any plans to hit the road?

Eleanor: Yes, we are currently booking for the spring and summer.  One of our first stops will be Treefort Music Fest in Boise, ID in March.

What else is happening next in Cavegreen’s world?

Eleanor: Next we are focusing on shows and making more music videos for Vita Lucida.  We also have new songs that we have been developing.
