INTERVIEW: Queen Liz

Hi Liz, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m very well, thank you for asking! I hope you’re doing great! Thank you for having me.

Can you tell us more about your newest single “Freak Show”?

It is a very upbeat, powerful song! I used a heavy baseline, along with a variety of synthesizers. I also incorporated Caribbean steel drums, which I tend to do in most of my songs, to create the tropical-pop sounding melody in the chorus. The song starts off with a creepy vinyl piano, which was something I was really attracted to. It definitely spoke “Freak Show” to me. I wanted the song to keep the listener guessing by adding in weird/different sounds.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes, actually. I went to a party with a few friends and was being judged the whole time. I hated the way it made me feel, so I thought I could write a song about my experience in hopes to inspire others to be themselves regardless of what people think. Parties are supposed to be fun… So, I created “Freak Show” to show a vision of my own party where EVERYONE is allowed and where no one would be judged.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! I cannot wait to share it once it is finished! I don’t have much experience in videography… but I love learning new things! I am working with some really talented people who are teaching me, and giving me tips. I am very excited!

How was the recording and writing process?

It was great! I really, thoroughly enjoy going to the studio. The whole experience brings me so much joy. People will look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them how long a session is. Most of them are about 12-13 hours! I will occasionally get grouchy and tired, but I guess that’s why they make 24 hour coffee shops! The whole experience is thrilling to me, and I love every moment of it!

The writing process was just as cool. I love feeling inspired, and it wasn’t hard for me to do so while creating this song. Every day after I would get off of work, I would wrap myself in a blanket and write for hours and hours. I did a lot of research on traveling shows (freak shows) and also watched the season “Freak Show” of “American Horror Story,” which helped with clothing, and sound inspirations.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material?

Yes! I want to keep my listeners on their toes at all times. I plan on messing around with different sounds to come up with something unique and different. I will be soon releasing a new single that has a different sound than most of my other songs, which I am extremely excited about. You should always be expecting something new from me!

How is that coming along?

So far so good! Now that I have an at home recording studio, it’s very easy for me to mess around with different sounds/vocals. I am extremely excited to finally be able to release new material anytime I want! I am also getting a few things set up to start filming my music videos at home, so. New material all around!

The cover and the song has quite different contrasts and symbolism, so to speak- would all the songs have that sort of opposite duality vibe?

No, not necessarily! I decided to go a different direction with Freak Show, regardless of if it made sense to others or not. That experience for me was really powerful, and for some reason the clown/freak show vibe REALLY spoke to me. It was weird, it was sexual, and most definitely out of the ordinary…Which is exactly what I am, and what I wanted to portray in that song. I felt like a weird clown that everyone was laughing at…and I got even more inspired because I felt I could incorporate that into the Freak Show theme. I looked different from everyone else there. I guess you could say I kind of turned it around and embraced the way I felt at that time, and made it a good story instead of a bad one.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! I plan to be touring by next summer. It’s going to take a lot of work, but I know I will be able to pull it off. I have a great support system, and wonderful friends by my side!

What else is happening next in Queen Liz’s world?

I will be releasing my new single I Want You Right Now very soon! I am extremely excited to share this song with everyone. I am working on a music video for Freak Show, which will be released in 2017! I’m also trying to find my way out to LA, and I am hoping within the next few months ill be able to pull it off. Lots of exciting things in Queen Liz’s world!
