Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Knock Me Out”? Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Sure, I was lucky enough to be given the vocals by AFSHeeN, a good friend of mine and incredible producer. I was keen to get out of my box a little bit and try something new so the change in bpm from my usual stuff was a perfect opportunity. I’m really happy with the way it turned out, it feels very different than my usual stuff but still has that familiar Lazy Rich sound.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Not at this stage, although the idea of me getting punched in the face in slow motion has been thrown around!
How was the recording and writing process?
The track has taken absolutely ages actually, almost a year since I first started on it. I’m lucky enough to have a good team of people to turn to for feedback and ideas so it wasn’t necessarily a difficult or frustrating track to make, it just took time for all the pieces to come together. It actually started out as a few different ideas; a funky house track, a d’n’b track, and a pop song, and all worked together well to make what you hear now.
What have you learned from your previous collaborations with the likes of Fatboy Slim and Lady Gaga?
Those were both just remixes actually, I’ve been honing my skills for almost 8 years now and it’s been a long slow process of improvement to get to where I am. It actually takes me way longer to produce songs now than I used to as they have to appeal to a different audience. They need to be actual songs that you listen to over and over again rather than just a weapon for the weekend.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind? Would you be playing with different styles or does KMO sets the tone for the whole material?
I do have a couple of other tracks that fit a similar theme, but there are no plans to release an album just yet. I’ve never been an album oriented artist and I don’t like the idea of forcing myself to produce a ton of tracks just to fill one up.
What else is happening next in Lazy Rich‘s world?
We’ll just have to see how well ‘Knock Me Out’ does – if all goes to plan you’ll be seeing a lot more of me next year!
