Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Pray”?
– “This is a song we all really connected with as soon as we wrote it. It came together quite organically and instantly felt good.”
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
-”Not a particular event just feelings. Its about feeling alone, introspection and hope.”
How was the film experience?
-”We had a lot of fun making the video for this song. I think it captures the dark theme of the lyrics well.”
The single comes off your new album Be Like The River – is this a sort of a conceptual album?
-”Not conceptual as such. But there is a recurrent theme of desolation tinged with hope.”
What’s the story behind the title?
-”The title comes from a song we wrote that didn’t make it to the album, the lyric is “Be like the river and cut through the stone/ fight like a lion defending his home”. It’s about staying true to yourself and overcoming obstacles to get where you need to be. We thought it was very fitting for us as a band and our journey so far.”
How was the recording and writing process?
“We still had songs left over that didn’t make the cut for the first album and we write a lot anyway and had no shortage of ideas. We had the luxury of having time to just concentrate on the writing so we were really prepared well for the studio.”
What was it like to work with Clint Murphy and how did that relationship develop?
-”He’s a great producer and we found him easy to work with. He was the obvious choice to record Be Like The River as we all had such a positive experience recording We Rise with him.”
How much did he influence the album?
-”He had a lot of great ideas as a producer and was really open to our ideas as well. We had a very firm idea of what we wanted to achieve and he helped us realise that.”
What aspect of perseverance and determination did you get to explore on this album?
-”The whole process for us was about overcoming adversity, growing and developing as a band and demonstrating our tenacity and perseverance. The album is a true testament to our determination.”
Any plans to hit the road?
-”Currently on the road as I wite this. We have 23 dates here in NZ and Australia then we look forward to getting back to Europe in Feb/March!
What else is happening next in Devilskin’s world?
-”We are really amped to be touring with the new material and a 28 ton truck full of gear. The crowds so far have been awesome and we are looking forward to US rock giants Halestorm coming to NZ to open some shows for us. It’s all keeping us very busy and we love it.
