By uniting the visionary talents of Metronomy with the vocal gift from glacial pop icon Robyn, ‘Hang Me Out To Dry’ became one of the year’s most heralded tracks. As 2016 drifts towards a close, the track – which features on the current
Metronomy album Summer 08 – is freshly boosted by a similarly inventive video which complements its nostalgic atmosphere.
Directed by Paris / Montreal filmmaking collective Dent de Cuir (The Shoes, Darwin Deez, Modeselektor), the video follows the tumultuous emotions of a woman who finds that her car provokes tough memories of a failed relationship.
Dent de Cuir commented: “A great man of cinema once said: ‘All you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun.’ We just swapped the gun for a car. This concept offered a great metaphor: love is just a car ride. But let’s cut the crap here, we did all of this for one reason: to put a check mark over ‘burning a 70s Dodge Aspen’ on our bucket list. We were surprised to see how simple it was to play with the practical image distortions on a car, and we also learnt that firefighters are the most efficient pyromaniacs in the world.”
Featuring the vocal gift of iconic ‘With Every Heartbeat’ vocalist Robyn, ‘Hang Me Out To Dry‘ is Metronomy‘s most immediately hypnotic pop track to date. Contrasting Robyn’s soaring hook with Mount’s understated vocal delivery, the track simmers with pulsating bass and insistent disco grooves.
‘Hang Me Out To Dry‘ , taken from Metronomy’s acclaimed new album Summer 08, was originally written during sessions for Metronomy’s Mercury Prize-nominated album English Riviera in 2011 but only recently reached its full potential when Mount revisited the track and enlisted Robyn’s expertise.
