Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Jodeci”?
Jodeci is what happens when you tell your mate (Beast) let’s make something wavey with a 90’s feel but with a modern bounce.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I take inspiration from life experiences, could be anything an advert, a movie, a night out etc.
Everyone seems to love the hook and the reference to Netflix, I just thought it would be something funny to add in.
How was the film experience?
Filming the vid was dope. We rented this huge house in Chelsea with built in sound system throughout the entire yard. I was using my own team so we always have fun, shoutout to my Director Darius Alexander who’s been rolling with me since day one.
How was the recording and writing process?
We recorded this at Beast’s house, it was originally a lot longer but at the time I was a student at the Notting Hill Academy of Music and they suggested some things and we made some tweaks. Writing is the easy part, I feel that’s my gift from God but it’s the rest of the package like the vid, marketing etc, that’s the hard part.
What was it like to work with Beast and how did that relationship develop?
I was introduced to Beast by his business partner Nyce, another sick producer in his own right. I had already been working with Nyce for years and it was just a matter of time before I met his team. Beast and I clicked straight away and we began making music almost instantly but it was only at the start of 2016 we decided to make a joint project.
How much did he get to influence the song?
I’m the guy for lyrics and harmonies, Beast is the guy for RnB and dope bass lines. When it all comes together it’s a wrap. We listen to each others suggestions and keep tweaking till we’re both happy.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Defo! Jodeci is the first single of our joint project ‘Levels’ look out for ‘24/7’ and another track called ‘All Night’
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Levels comes out on the 16/12/16 on all major digital platforms.
Any plans to hit the road?
Hopefully early Jan, I just need to ask Will Smith if I can borrow his tour bus.
What else is happening next in Ember Phoenix’s world?
More Life… no Drake. More music and a solo album dropping early 2017.
