Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Paris II”? Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
The song is inspired by a number of events, namely our hardship as musicians surviving in Paris when the GFC hit and our label became liquidated.
Suddenly, the magic of living in Paris disappeared and we were faced with the lonely reality that to continue as musicians in Paris we would have to return to our independent roots – a path, which, most indie artists would agree, has enormous challenges to say the least!
It was a bit of a harsh wake up call as we had gone from closing The Cannes Film Festival, playing to thousands of people around France to then going back to playing small local bars to survive and constantly dealing with French bureaucracy and paperwork! It really felt like Paris didn’t love us anymore.
Can you tell us more about the upcoming video?
The video is an artistic collaboration between Belle Roscoe and Paris based creative studio SOxH Factory, it is a homage to the place we called home for a number of years, and a tribute to the culture and creativity of the city. We wanted to show the real Paris, not just the post card version of Paris, what it is like to live in the city and how it feels to leave its embrace.
How was the recording and writing process?
“Paris II” was written in an apartment in Paris whilst we were living there a couple of years ago. It was then recorded in various studios between Belgium, Malta and Paris with Belgian producer Luuk Cox.
What aspect of the Paris attack get to influence the song?
Although the song was written a year or so before the Paris attacks, its very sentiment, lyrics and story bizarrely feels like it was some kind of prophesy; which is why we wanted to work with SOxH Factory to create a video clip to subtly pay homage and tribute to the difficult and devastating times in France over the past year, yet offer hope and strength. We wanted to give back to the city that has given us so much… Le Bataclan was and is one of our favouite music venues in Paris, we have attended many concerts there over the years. This was our way to pay tribute to the musicians living in Paris and all those who were directly affected at the Bataclan.
What role does UK plays in your music?
The UK now plays a massive role in our music! We moved to London in March and have been focused on cracking the scene ever since. It’s both overwhelming and inspiring. The scene is HUGE. We are one of many artists trying to push through… We have played some 70 shows throughout the UK since arriving and it has been an unbelievable baptism of fire! We have started doing some recordings also in London and will focus on releasing new singles in 2017.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! New material is definitely on its way. We have toured the world this year, including the US, Germany, Croatia, Sweden, France and have performed over 130 shows since March. It has been amazing, but we are hanging out for some concentrated writing and recording time. We plan to record a new album in 2017.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
First single release is scheduled for February 2017.
Any plans to hit the road?
We are thrilled to say that this year of touring is not yet over! We are winding up some shows in Paris and then heading to Cuba for 5 weeks to play, write, record and jam with Cuban musicians & rest from a huge year of touring. It is an amazing time to be going there, no doubt Fidel’s passing will offer much insight & inspiration into this fascinating country.
In February 2017, we hit the road again in Germany for a small tour before summer festivals. We had the pleasure of joining fellow Australian, Jaimi Faulkner on tour in October and have consequently fallen in love with this market. We cannot wait to return. Having said that, we a very excited to be concentrating again on the UK market in 2017 and hope we fall in love with it as much… Or it falls in love with us! Haha!
What else is happening next in Belle Roscoe’s world?
Early next year we will be recording and releasing new tracks. We also have various other video clips on the horizon. Come summer, we will tour in the UK and Europe, maybe even a quick visit back to Australia for a show or two also… Would love to keep you guys posted!
