INTERVIEW: KOLE

Hi Kole, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you for having me! I’ve been great, I’m really taking advantage of the cozy weather and spending as much time as I can cooped up in a studio writing which I pretty much do anyways even on the sunny days.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Bloody Mary”?

Yes, the single Bloody Mary is pop but definitely more edgy then most things I’ve written, I’m trying to really show and embrace a darker side of myself which has always been covered up in the past due to other influences around me. I call it dark pop.  I hope to really convey a raw sound and strip away from anything too pretty- I really FEEL things and I want that to come across in what I’m creating.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes, I think Bloody Mary is really about a reinvention of one self- whether it was my career or past relationships it’s me shedding the bullshit and I think most people can relate to this.

Can you tell us more about the upcoming video? There is a teaser out now that’s on my website thekoletruth.com that basically portrays me “killing” my past self, (yes there’s blood involved) but we also have another video coming out in January collaborating some amazing dancers using movement to tell the story! We’re very excited about it!

How are you causing the death of your old self?

I think I’m causing the death of my old self by being more true to myself, if that makes sense? A persona was built up for me in the industry and even my personal life that I eventually couldn’t identify or connect with, I essentially created a monster- so this is a chance to “kill” that person and really show people the real me. I’m grateful for my past because it’s the path that lead me to a place where I am now with the guts to shed the layers.

How was the recording and writing process?

I work with an amazing producer but I also have been experimenting with other producer’s in the electronic scene I haven’t worked with in the past- I want to try it all and really explore my new sound. The writing is therapeutic and has always been my strength- I have a lot to say and share. I’m a storyteller but I write what I know and what I know if life…..so I’m writing life.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes yes yes. I have so much new music I don’t know what to do with it, but it will all roll out in 2017, I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

January 2017, whether you’re ready for me or not.

How would this record showcase a new matured side of you? I’m done with the bullshit, I’m done with trying to please others- this is me taking back my identity and confidence and really just throwing it out there- it’s refreshing and FREEING.

What led you to “grow up” musically?

Telling the truth, calling it how I see it… no one will fight for you unless you fight for yourself and that goes for work & relationships / romance & business.

Would you be playing with different styles and themes on this material?

Yes, everything is dark but playful. I want to empower those who have ever been taken advantage of in any aspect of your life, I want to light your inner deamon and reinsure that you will rise above.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! More to come in 2017.

What else is happening next in KOLE’s world?

More content, I want people to really see the KOLE style and perspective- my Instagram and socials will be kept up to date with my antics 😉
