INTERVIEW: Melisa Whiskey

Hi Melisa, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey Guys! I’m all good – thanks

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Played”?

Yes Played is a song I wrote about going through the motions of giving your all in a relationship but having nothing to show for it. And feeling let down. Because u went for it against all odds with this person & it still didn’t go your way.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Yes I was going through a difficult time in a relationship. And this was such an emotional rollercoaster for me. As when things were good they were good & when things were bad I just felt so Played. Like I was being strung along.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We just shot the video in Camden & also In Chalk farm right outside the flats where I grew up. Video should be out in the coming week.

How was the recording and writing process?

Super cool, I did a lot of writing in F-Block in Ealing with ADP.  And played was one of the first songs we wrote together about 18months ago. Writing wise it was cool to be working with a producer that lets me be myself so it was easy writing deep lyrics around him.

How’s your new EP coming along?

Nicely!! I’m so happy about it honestly, were having 5 tracks. Played will be on the EP  & there will be me really just showcasing my life & things I’ve gone through. And I love to dance so there will be some up-tempos on there. Just real Soulful but with a bit of Whiskey in it! Ahah. I haven’t finished it all yet though we still have a few more sessions to really get it to being a complete body of work. My friend & producer Osinachi Nwaneri has really come through with some music that showcases my artistic sound.-

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

We’re looking to drop the EP Late March Early April. Title wise I’m not confirmed on anything just yet.

I understand you are working with a series of producers – are you looking for a particular element on them?

Definitely, I’m very musical in my approach to music so its important that who ever I’m working with has a great grasp of instruments. Working a lot with Osinachi Nwaneri whose produced so far three tracks that will be on the EP has been a breath of fresh air. As he plays so many instruments so well! And together I feel like we could push the boundaries on what Soul music should sound like today. Which is exciting for me. And I’ve collaborated also on this EP with ADP whose brought  -through a really British & Soulful sounding production on Played.

This means then we can expect a very eclectic record?

Definitely, I’m massively into Soul & old retro music but then I also love hip-hop, grime & heavy beats. So hopefully they’ll be a bit of something for everyone.

How poetic can we expect this EP to be?

I’m very passionate about song writing so lyrically we will be keeping it fresh, I have a track that will be on the EP called “Hard to Say goodbye” which I wrote with Frank Colucci the drummer for Indie Band OH WONDER. Which is all quite metaphorical as I’m singing about some-one close to me who passed that’s probably the deepest & most poetic song. The others are a lot more Vibes for you to have fun & feel good..

Any plans to hit the road?

Definitely, upon release of the EP the plan would be to showcase & start performing more in the UK especially major cities of London, Birmingham & Manchester just really building up a connection with people.

What else is happening next in Melisa Whiskey’s world?

I’m starting up a Youtube series with weekly updates every Thursday at 6.30pm  blogging me & my journey in music. I’m also in the process of putting together my first clothing line of branded Jackets & hats. In addition to continuing to write & record music whether for myself or features & collaborations with other artists.
