INTERVIEW: Jamie Kent

How would you classify your music?

I tend to describe my music as “indie country”, or what would happen if “Tom Petty lived in Nashville.” 🙂

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, Will Hoge, Eric Church

What do you want fans to take from your music?

I want to both make people think and dance. I believe being a songwriter comes with a great opportunity and responsibility to change the world in a positive way. I try to write lyrics that will have an impact on the way people view the current world we’re living in. And then put that over music that makes people want to dance and come party with us. 🙂

How’s the music scene in your locale?

Well I live in Nashville, which I truly believe is the best place in the world to play music right now. There’s so much happening here now; so much growth, so much diversity of music, so much energy. I think people will look back on this time in Nashville as they have the 60s in San Francisco or 70s in the East Village.

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

Bruce Springsteen at Fenway Park. It was truly an education.

Playing live is what fuels this whole journey for me. It’s where I can connect with fans and really see the impact of the songs I write. There’s nothing better than having someone come up to you after a show with a story of how a song touched their lives in some unique way. That’s why I do what I do right there.

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

That’s like picking a favorite child! I suppose at this particular moment, “Home Again” is really hitting me. It’s about the mental battle our Veteran’s continue to go through once returning stateside. That song is having more of an impact on fans than I could have imagined, and it’s fueling us to push it harder on the road and help heal as much as many people as we can.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

Over the past year or two I really focused my time and energy on taking my songwriting to the next level. I truly believe the song is what endures the test of time and can make or break careers. Two years ago I wrote 25 songs. Last year I wrote 150.

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

I think that’d have to be Bruce. He’s just been such an inspiration as a band leader, entertainer, and businessman. I’d love to pick his brain, hear some stories, and talk shop.

What’s next for you?

I currently write from Las Vegas amidst a month long cross country album release tour! After this, we get read to launch “Home Again” as the second single, partnering with the Pat Tillman Foundation and Musicians on Call to bring music to VA Hospitals around the country and raise money to help Veteran’s transition back to civilian life.
