Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Am Your Eyes”
“Am Your Eyes” was the first song we made as Mungbean. Technically it was made before we were even Mungbean. The song came together from a beat lingering in Sean’s head, and we explored the opportunity to pursue this electronic writing approach. We started making music for fun, and realized how much we enjoyed the process. So, we immediately wanted to try more of it.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
The day we laid down vocals for Am Your Eyes, the words sort of came from a place of confusion and frustration. The song is about being a woman and ultimately feeling devalued beyond the value immediately placed on physical attributes. It was an ongoing discussion we’d been having for awhile, in friend groups and social forums, and the thoughts came to life through some spur-of-the-moment songwriting.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
We’re working on a video for “Am Your Eyes” with a few of our super awesome creative friends! Between our collaborative group, we’ve all been contributing some pretty unique and diverse material across the board, which is exactly how we wanted it. We’ll be anticipating the release around the turn of the new year.
How was the recording and writing process?
Everything we’ve recorded has been recorded in our bedrooms, backyards, bathrooms, etc. We’re writing all the time, separate and together, so we wanted to capture that sort of real-life, spur of the moment feeling. We recorded many different sounds in a lot of different spaces.
What role does The Flaming Lips plays in your music?
We’re both Lips fans. I think some of the greatest inspiration we’ve drawn from the Lips is their approach to making music – we love the writing process, and how songs can come together on a whim to become something you would have never expected.
How’s your new album coming along?
We just finished our last show of the year, so this winter is going to be dedicated to recording and refining our current batch of songs for the EP in our home studio. A lot of our songs were written and recorded on the spot while working on beats, synth sounds, vocal melodies etc., so from here forward, we’re focusing on perfecting the mixes.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
It’s a secret 🙂 but you can expect it in late Spring!
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! We’ll be playing all around Ohio in January and early next year. We’ll be playing regional mini-tours through the course of the Spring, and route a full tour after our EP release in late Spring!
What else is happening next in Mungbean’s world?
A lot of very cool stuff is in the Mungbean sphere, and we can’t even begin to tell you about it here. More music, art, collaborations, an EP and shows coming at you soon! The best way to keep up with our shenanigans is by liking our FB page (Mungbean) and following our Instagram account (mungbeanband).
