Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Splendid! Thanks for the invite!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Not Sorry”?
Sure, this is the first single from Lady & Jones. The song focuses on a failing relationship where 2 people are at their boiling point. It is an upbeat track with, quick lyrical lines and tight harmonies.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Jones: “It was actually several events. One day, I was on my way home from work (yes, I still have my glorious day job) and was feeling frustrated. I felt my good work ethic was being taken advantage of. The phase came to me, “you use my devotion as my weakness”. A couple of days later, Lady (Amber) and I were having a conversation and she said, “I’m sorry, I’m not sorry”. We both laughed and put it in the notebook as a song idea. The meat of the song came from those around us and the toxic relationships they were in. All this together and “Not Sorry” was born.”
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Absolutely! If you want to see a good piano smash, definitely keep an eye out for the video! We have already shot the footage and are finalizing the edits now with the DP. They did great work and we are very excited to see the finished product. Hopefully fans will see it within the next few weeks!
The single comes off your new self-titled EP – why naming the record after the band?
The EP is basically our debut. Each song is an original pieces we have written since living in LA, so we felt that it made sense.
How was the recording and writing process?
Lady: “The writing process differs on each song but typically Jones starts the process. I call Jones the “magical lyricist” and he calls me “the Hammer”. I swoop in to gently make changes to the music. Gently… like a sledgehammer, I guess. This song was no exception. Ha Ha! For the recording we worked with Mert Ozcan & Beto Vargas of the Record House to produce the album. They were very detailed and wonderful to work with! It was tricky to find time to record as I was on the road for much of the pre-production. When I got back it was crunch time. We laid down all the vocals in 3 days, staying up until 1 AM most nights. We were all slap happy by the end of each night. There is something incredibly special about turning over a vision to someone else and seeing what they bring to the table. What a fun experience!”
What aspect of your marriage would you get to explore on this record?
You wouldn’t know this yet but the EP is almost entirely break up songs, so we don’t want to explore it too much. Ha Ha! But on a serious note, the writing process has allowed us to reflect on how to keep growing together instead of growing apart.
Any plans to hit the road?
No long road trips yet, our plan is to perform locally in Southern California but in the future we would LOVE to tour!
What else is happening next in Lady & Jones’ world?
We are working on the music video for the next single release. The song is called “Our Story of Beauty” and it is one of our favorites on the EP! Stay tuned for a stunning music video location and a bit of dancing as well!
