Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Find Out”?
“Find Out” is the first single off of my debut record and it’s been absolutely amazing to be able to share this song with the world. The initial response has been incredible! It’s a catchy, rhythmic heartbreak tune that provides some energy to a not so fun topic. It’s not your typical heartbreak song.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, I was in a relationship in which I had a feeling wouldn’t last long due to a lack of commitment from my significant other. Being a touring artist, I’m frequently on the road and away for some time, but when I finally came home, my fear had become a reality. The person I was involved with wasn’t so interested in me anymore and had moved on. Instead of writing a song showing that I was broken, I chose to write an upbeat song showing that I wasn’t fooled or jaded.
How was filming the video?
Filming the video was an amazing experience. Acclaimed director Philly Fly Boy directed the music video and his vision helped bring the story to life. The playful, charismatic nature of the plot went hand in hand with the overall tone and vibe of the song.
The single comes off your new album Open Letters – what’s the story behind the title?
Each song off of this record is an open letter written about a specific situation I was in, but its up to the listener to interpret the “letters” in any which way they feel.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was such a grueling process but I loved every second. We recorded the album in Toronto in a total of 10 days. I co-wrote all 10 tracks with incredibly talented songwriters and producers. We wrote a song during the day and then recorded the content in the evening and this process was followed for all of the tracks.
You worked with some special songwriters – did you handpick them or how did they come on board?
Being able to work with such talented and industry leading professionals was incredible. I did get to choose who I wanted to bring on board and based my decisions off of working with professionals who have been successful in the pop genre.
What did they bring to the table?
Being able to work with professionals who are relevant and successful in there given fields brought validity and experience to this project, which made it so special to interact and learn while working on my record.
What personal struggles and experiences did you get to explore with this material?
The most important aspect of this project for me was being able to tell a genuine story. For that to happen, I really had to open up my barriers and let the listeners in. It was uncomfortable for me at first, but in order to write powerful songs, I took the initiative to really open up about my life.
Any plans to hit the road?
Always! It’s a priority to be able to play in front of my fans so there are plans in the works to get back on the road.
What else is happening next in Aleem’s world?
At the top of the year I’ll be getting back in the studio to work on some new music and I hope to be touring the US in early 2017!
