‘FASCINATE YA’ is the brand new single from Tara Priya – an addictive slice of lush, grooving pop-soul. Her vocals, alternately sultry and ethereal, glide over hip-hop-soaked drums and icy synths to command the subject – so common he wouldn’t stand out in a criminal line-up – to “drop my heart at the door” and then mockingly ask, “do I fascinate ya?” Listen here
‘Fascinate Ya’ is the follow up to last year’s acclaimed EP ‘Friends Like These’ – a gorgeous collection that included the singles ‘Friends Like These,’ ‘One Foot Out’ and ‘Who That.’ Effortlessly blending elements of jazz, soul and the irresistible grooves of ‘90’s hip-hop, Tara creates a sound that’s classic, contemporary and original, one that’s already won her radio support from the likes of Simon Raymonde (Amazing Radio), Tom Robinson (6Music), Yasser (BBC Radio 1xtra) and Jamie Cullum (Radio 2).
Tara Priya was born in San Francisco to a Persian mother, niece of lauded poet and modernist painter Sohrab Sepehri and actor Reza Kianian, and an Indian father. Tara trained in opera and jazz voice from the age of 11. After two years at Columbia University, she left New York for Los Angeles, where she sang hooks on rap demos in underground hip-hop studios in exchange for recording time for her own R&B/soul music.
Her first self-release, written & co-produced by Tara, was discovered in a vinyl record shop in Kobe, Japan, by indie tastemaker P-Vine Records (King, The Roots, Chet Faker) and was subsequently released in Japan, where it debuted at #2 on iTunes and hit #6 on the Billboard Japan airplay charts. Tara then began collaborating with London producer SteveBooker (Jessie J, John Newman). She quickly fell in love with the east London music scene and moved there shortly after ward in 2014.
Tara’s inspirations (J Dilla, M.I.A., FKA Twigs, Lauryn Hill) came together in her aforementioned 2015 EP, which she co-wrote and produced with Jimmy Logic, Joe Garrett (Zayn Malik, Krept & Konan) and Ragz Originale (Skepta, Krept & Konan), who continue to influence her current recordings.
