INTERVIEW: Affordable Hybrid

Answers by Mikael Björklund

How have you been? Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Bat”?

Lars told me he wanted the song to be dangerous, fast and quirky. He also wanted it to be on the radio. It’s not a love song, it’s a song for everyone. It took Lars about ten minutes to finish the song, then we made it Affordable Hybrid together. For me personally it’s a song that captures the feeling of being hunted. And that’s important, since you’re always hunted by someone. Or is that only me? Well, it’s a dangerous world we live in and it’s spinning faster and faster.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Lars lived in Berlin for some time. One day he was at a video shop there, flipping his way through the section with old horror movies. Frankenstein was there, The Misfits was there… Somewhere between these old classics the idea of Bat came to him.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes. Only plans so far though. Humans of the world today are so spoiled with impressions. It feels like music isn’t enough for them anymore, they also need something pretty to lay their eyes on. And that shouldn’t be a problem for us to arrange. Just take a look at a band photo!

How was the recording and writing process?

It all went very fast actually. Bands and artists today compose, record, produce and whatever for so long. Weeks turn to months and months to years. We didn’t do that. We wanted to keep the energy. Lars and Samuel wrote the songs and then we made them Affordable Hybrid as a group. Previous recordings for us lasted for a much longer period of time. Personally I think being in the studio for too long takes the edge out of the songs and you get bored of them, no matter how good they are. This recording was very quick though. Not hasty, more like a bomb. Full of energy and causing a big bang. Maybe planet earth wasn’t created, but a new Affordable Hybrid album.

Why taking so long on releasing new material?

We recorded and released two albums and toured heavily between 2007 and 2009. And touring is like some social experiment where you pack a group into a very tight space and then keep them within 10 meters from each other for weeks. I guess we needed to do something else for a while. But finally we realized that we missed Affordable Hybrid in our lives.

How did Paris get to influence the new music?

Not at all. Samuel and Lars was in Paris at the same time for a day in april 2015 though. Samuel happened to see that Lars was doing a solo show when he was there on vacation and he made a surprise visit. They had some wine, Samuel joined Lars on stage to do a Misfits cover, they shook hands and agreed it was time to make a new Affordable Hybrid album.  So I wouldn’t say Paris influenced the music. But it can’t be a coincidence that lots of couples go to Paris to get engaged or married, right? It must be something really strong in the air there, that somehow makes it’s way through that big city smog.

How did time helped the band to musically matured?

We all played music in different ways during this time period, so we’re probably much better at playing now. Lars and Samuel also evolved their song writing and singing. We might have gotten older, but age is just a number. Punk and rock is about energy and you can’t allow aging to get in the way of that. So even if we have more experience and less hair, punk mentality wise we’re still kids.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

You definitely can. Actually we recorded a full album that’s just waiting for you.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

At the moment we call it Blue. We agreed it’s the most beautiful of colors. The sea is blue, so is the sky. It’s also a feeling. Maybe not a very beautiful one, but still. Lars and I are also big fans of Italian soccer and the beautiful blue jersey of their national team. If you wait for Blue, Blue will come to you. Sometime in the first half of 2017 most definitely.

Would both new singles work as a sneak peek for this upcoming new record?

I think all of the new songs stand strong by themselves and have different qualities. We were never a band who finished a hundred songs and then kept ten for a record, we let the strong ones live and develop and the weaker ones die early. Darwin would have been a big fan I’m afraid. Affordable Hybrid sounds like Affordable Hybrid and I think you’ll see how all the songs for the album fit together like workers in a strong union. Bat and Roky were both written by Lars though and his songs might in general be a bit different from Samuel’s. So I think the album will show more variation than these two songs do.

Any plans to hit the road? What else is happening next in Affordable Hybrid’s world?

I would say that we in Affordable Hybrid do what we enjoy to do, as we did when we made these new songs. We’ll do whatever comes in our way, as long as we think we’ll have a good time doing it. Except for that we’ll of course try to conquer the world and all that usual stuff.
