INTERVIEW: Bultur

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been lately?

Hello there, we are great and very happy about answering all these questions. Now we are in a fantastic moment with lots of things to do and just thinking about music.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Abisal”? And what about to put together some words on the forthcoming mini album? Did any event in particular inspire you guys to write / entitle the released track?

During years, it has been hard for us to write, we did not feel totally convinced about what we wanted to say. Sometimes thinking too much is not very productive. When we started with this new project, now in Spanish, some of the components started to write lyrics and we realized that were just the way we wanted to have in the band.

Abisal was written by Alvaro Calzado and there is a message on it. Something really personal and even private but if you listen to it and your read it carefully you will notice about it. Love is present for the first time in our songs or at least being so evident.

Any plans to release a video for the song? (Besides the Art video) If so, enrolling again Mauri D. Galiano for that? Any stories on the Out in the Cold filming / realization?

Yes, we are planning a great idea with our friend Mauri D. Galiano. He will be with us again for our upcoming videos. We would like to tell you about our plans but unfortunately we can not. As soon as we get it, we will let you know about it.

It was really fun to film the “Out in the Cold” video, for many different reasons, but one of them was the location itself, all the snow you see in the video is real, so it was a real challenge for the actors and for us just to get there with all the filming material and stuff, so yeah… That is one of the many happy memories we have with Mauri.

Why naming the album after this track in particular?

Abisal was the first song that we wrote in Spanish, it  was the beginning of the change and the transition from our previous Ep and Lp to this new Abisal. It is a really important song for us because changing from one language to another was not an easy decision.

How was the recording and writing process for the full release?

We loved it. After we were convinced about our change, everything was fast. Working all together is really easy for us, we are used to live many days together and share everything so, when we felt that this new project was a great motivation, our energies were incredible.

Recording at Reno Studios was fantastic. The place is great, fill with different awesome areas for practicing before recording and also a ping-pong (table) so you can relax a little.

What was it like to work with Brais Ruibal and how did that relationship develop?

We met Brais after playing in Siroco, Madrid. He offered his help years ago and so, we started to work with him. Our relation is really good and we trust him a lot, his opinion is very important for us and the way he helps us is fantastic. Very polite but with a clear message.

How much did he get to influence the mini LP?

It is very different if you just get someone to record with or if he is producing you. Brais came to our local many days when we were practicing our songs. He came to our houses also to work on the lyrics, guitars, synths and so, he has worked on every part of the new mini LP.

His influence is high and he made us go through some difficulties during the recording process that were great for the final songs. He knows what we are capable of and he tries to “squeeze” us.

How funk and electronic were you seeking for this album to be? (listening once again now both “Komorebi” and “Pleamar”)

We did not think about funk during the composition but it came, maybe we have it inside and we had not been able to play it yet. When doing these songs, we had no limits, no boundries or anything, we just did everything as it came from inside. Now we are really proud about it, we love playing live and these kind of songs can be very attractive in a concert.

What aspect of hollowness and love did you get to explore on this material?

When we write our songs, or make music, is always a combine process, every one of us put something unique and personal in every song, so there’s a lot of different layers of deepness in every one as we all go through it. And about love, we all love every song that ‘makes the cut’ to the studio, and you can feel that specially when you see us in live, that is one of the multiple things that makes Bultur what it is, a group of friends gathered together to do something they all love at the same level.

Any plans to hit the road?

We have been planning some concerts but we still need to fix the dates, these months have been very busy because of the new mini LP and the Showcase that we will have in Siroco on the 17th of November. All the dates will be published shortly.

What else is happening next in BULTUR’s world?

We are planning something very special with our friend Mauri D.Galiano and we think this is going to be incredible. We are also planning to play in some Nordic country during the winter, now we are working on dates and will post as soon as possible about it.

Some new songs are ready and we will be working during the winter on new ones and gigs all over Spain. We are now fixing the dates for the upcoming concerts.
