Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Come On, Let’s Dance”?
Christina- I wanted to write a fun song that got people moving. I noticed that when I attend shows people seem detached or indifferent, paying attention to their phones and barely watching the band. People don’t dance very much anymore at shows and I wanted to change that with a song that makes people want to move. “Come On, Let’s Dance!” acts as an invitation to connect with the audience.
Matt- Christina gave me the song, we played around with it for a while trying different styles and arrangements and what ended up sticking was putting a classic Ramones style drum beat behind it.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Christina- I love dancing, so I decided to write a song about how much I love it and how it makes me feel!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Christina- Yep! It has already been done and you can watch it here:
We shot the live portion of the video at six 01 studios in Burbank, CA and we shot our friends dancing our own living room for the remainder of the video.
Why naming the album after this track in particular?
Christina- It was the most upbeat/catchy song out of the four and had a nice hook and kept it fun.
How was the recording and writing process?
Christina- I had written 3 of these songs prior to The Hellflowers and “Fire In Your Eyes” was a collaboration. For me, this was the most comfortable and fun time I have had recording.
Matt- recording was a blast! Dave Klein really knocked this out of the park! He really was instrumental in making this EP sound huge and bringing it to life. He knew exactly what we were looking for.
What was it like to work with Dave Klein and how did that relationship develop?
Matt- I met Dave through our mutual friend Nicole Laurenne of The Darts, while working on a theme song for “The Adventures of Crash Tucker”, an animated project I am developing. He really captured the sound I was looking for, so it was only natural for me to want to work with him again.
Christina – Matt showed me the song for his project and I was floored! I immediately had him call Dave and schedule our first recording session.
How much did he get to influence the album?
Matt- We came in with a pretty strong vision of how we wanted this record to sound. Dave got it and helped us develop the sound we wanted and even making it stronger with his own unique style.
What role does the 80s play in your music?
Christina- I think the 80’s has a huge role in our music since a lot of our favorite bands and artists that influence us the most came from that time.
Any plans to hit the road?
Christina- Yes, always! We’ve toured and continue to tour around California and some of the southwest but we are looking to expand that reach all the time.
What else is happening next in The Hellflowers’ world?
Christina- We are planing to record another 4 song Ep early next year along with more music videos and possibly heading overseas.
