Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hiya! It’s great to be here, thanks for having us.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Beering”?
For sure, it’s track one and the first single from our new EP “As Good As Gold” that’s coming 20th January. We think the song is a great representation of what As The Sun Sleeps is, fun, bouncy, fast and energetic.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
We were sat in traffic driving home from a show in Guildford on a Wednesday night passing the time by telling stories about silly drunken mistakes. Each verse of “Beering” is about a story told in the car that night.
How was the film experience?
Really fun! We shot the video in a day and worked with our friends Sam and Sherylee to bring it together. We’re really happy with how the video turned out and we got to do a lot of stupid stuff on camera. Shrimp ended up with “BEERING” tattooed on his ankle, Broady was mauled by two very aggressive pug dogs, Joe ended up falling into a stream and Trees got knocked out by a 60 year old.
The single comes off your new record As Good As Gold – what’s the story behind the title?
We recorded the EP in Sheffield and we usually head over to the Weatherspoons in the city centre for breakfast… or dinner… or both. For some reason that place bring out our creative side as we named our last EP sat in there too. Broady is a man of many nicknames, one of which is “Bronze” because he is always inexplicably tanned, he brought a cap with “Bronze” on the front and on the back it says “As Good As Gold”. While eating and throwing around random EP name ideas, Joe spotted that on his cap and it just felt like the perfect name right away. The EP art is a sort of DIY parody of a Tiffany Jewellery box.
How was the recording and writing process?
Rad! We had around 7 songs pretty much finished and we knew we wanted to have 4 of them on the EP (Beering, Florida, Forever Sick and What Matters Most) but we didn’t feel the other songs were on par to use as the fifth song. We demoed those 4 songs and set to writing the fifth and final song, we finished “Nothing But Net” about a week before we went into the studio and we’re all super stoked on how it turned out, it’s our favourite song at the moment. We recorded “As Good As Gold” over 6 days with Drew Lawson in Steel City Studio, it all went really smoothly and we’re super stoked with the final product.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
The general lyrical theme of this EP is the negative effects of drinking too much, and relationships, not necessarily girls, but friendships and the ever changing dynamics within them. Musically inspiration was taken from all of our favourite bands and each other.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yup, we’re currently booking as many shows in January 2017 as possible to support the EP release, we currently have 5 shows booked and plenty more in the pipeline so keep an eye on our social media for an announcement very soon!
What else is happening next in As The Sun Sleeps’ world?
Apart from on the aforementioned shows, the video for “Beering” will be out very early December, the EP “As Good As Gold” is out 20th January and we will be releasing another single and video shortly after that too.
