INTERVIEW: Von Sell
Hi Von, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Not terrible at all! You?
Very busy for the most part, so no time really to pause and ask myself how I am… I think I prefer it that way
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Names”?
I have a lot of songs on the EP that were a real piece of work, with infinite back and forth. “Names” was different in that regard and came much more natural to me… I actually finished it within a couple of weeks, which is really fast for me. The song itself kind of took me on a musical journey – something about it made it possible to very organically operate outside of the constraints of a traditional pop-song.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
I’m not very ‘event-driven’ when it comes to my songs, if that makes any sense 🙂 – It’s more like afterwards that I realize what the song is about and what drove me. In this case, the song is very much about getting older. The fear of it, but also the acceptance of it. And the acceptance of yourself. The lack thereof, I think is the root of all inauthenticity.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yeah, we’re actually working on that right now!!
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote, recorded and produced everything in my little pseudo studio, which is really just a big room with a laptop, microphone and keyboard. Once I had finished a first draft of a song, I would send it to my friend Nick (Stumpf), who helped me finish and mix the tracks. Those crucial last 10%… I don’t know how I would’ve done it without him. He just guided me there, like a good therapist 🙂
What role does Germany plays in your music?
Certainly not a conscious one, but in terms of what you absorb musically, growing up in Europe is definitely different from growing up in the States – less Aerosmith, more Kraftwerk… less Blink182, more Daft punk etc if that makes sense. And not just in terms of the music itself, but also in terms of the cult of personality and the whole culture around that.
How has your studies influence you as an artist and music in general?
In a weird way, that you just have to make it up as you go along anyway… and that there really are no formulas. Wether you have an academic background or not, there really is no alternative to learning by doing.
Any plans to hit the road?
I can’t wait to hit the road eventually, but right now we’re still very much in the building phase as a band; so for the time being we’re sticking to playing in NYC.
What else is happening next in Von Sell’s world?
My main focus right now is a full length album I’ve been working on for a few months now… apart from that to eventually hit the road of course 🙂
Q: Can you talk more about your song “Sister Sally”? I occasionally refer to my …
