We’ve been great thanks. Things have been a bit crazy recently with all the promotion for the new single, but its exciting & we’re very much looking forward to it coming out.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Melting”?
Its only the second song we have officially released & it comes out on the 4th November. We wrote it at the start of the year & recorded it during the summer at The Motor Muesum in Liverpool with Al Groves.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
Its been a pretty crazy year, with so many icons having passed away & all the madness of international conflicts & disasters. You hear about all this stuff & it can really get you down thinking about the bigger picture. Having someone you care about can help you deal with it, and the song explores the ways that having someone can make you forget about all else.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
We have just finished the video which we think should come out around about the time of the official release. We had a great time putting it together as we hosted a competition on our fan page where loads of people sent in footage of themselves singing & dancing along to the song. Some of the submissions were, shall we say … interesting, but having so many different people involved has helped give the video a really fun & colourful feel, which we think suits the song pretty well.
How was the recording and writing process?
After the success of our last single we really wanted to follow it up quickly, so we had the song written & we tried to get to a studio as quickly as possible. We were very lucky that a friend of ours put us in touch with Al Groves, who is an amazing producer who luckily liked the song & agreed to work with us.
What was it like to work with Al Grooves and how did that relationship develop?
We exchanged e-mails at first, then we had a skype call where we talked about the song & where we wanted to go with it. The recording experience itself was amazing. He runs this beautiful studio in Liverpool called The Motor Museum, and he was such a professional when it came to putting in the hours to make the song what it needed to be, but at the same time really fun & cool to be around. He has that amazing quality of seeing past any problem, and not losing his cool when things didn’t quite go to plan.
How much did he get to influence the song?
We valued his opinion so much, not only because of his track record & all the amazing bands he has worked with, but also because he had such a great way of putting his ideas across. He was very sincere & always left the ball in our court when it came to making big decisions, but he definitely had an influence as whenever he suggested something it was usually the right thing to do.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
We’ve already started writing the next one & we are hoping to get into the studio in January to start recording.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Melting will be released on November 4th and we are hoping to follow it up with something next spring.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’ve been doing a promotional tour around Scotland throughout October, playing all the major cities & so far the response has been phenomenal. We are very excited to be celebrating the release of the single with our first London show on the 5th November at The Water Rats. The show is organised by This Feeling who have helped us out a lot this last year.
What else is happening next in Moonlight Zoo’s world?
Besides all the single promotions we have been writing like mad preparing for the next single. We are gonna be playing a big hometown show at the end of the year & then gearing up for 2017 which we hope is gonna be our biggest year yet.
