2016 has seen Adia Victoria release her critically acclaimed debut album Beyond The Bloodhounds (Canvasback) and hone her live show with appearances across the United States, Europe and the UK. Today she reveals a series of animated spoken word shorts set to her poetry. Entitled howdoyoudo the clips were animated by artist Andrew Ralph and the first, “Riding Lessons,” premiered via NOWNESS. Ralph told them, “Since this poem is about Adia’s insecurities when she was a young girl, I wanted to create an animation that felt childish, almost nostalgic to the viewer. The digital 2D animation is inspired by old episodes of Sesame Street and cartoons that I grew up watching in the ’90s.”
Like REM, Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, Jim James and Aimee Mann, October has seen Adia Victoria contribute a track to 30 Days, 30 Songs – Artists For a Trump-Free America. “Backwards Blues” was released on October 19 and Adia said, “Perhaps the greatest irony is how a campaign fueled by outright lies reveals a deep-seated kernel of truth of what far too many Americans hold up as sacred: massive wealth, the sway of celebrity, branding, power, and greed.” n Listen to “Backwards Blues” here.
Adia is winding down the year by continuing to tour. Her shows – engaging, intense and nothing short of captivating – are not to be missed. Today (October 26) sees her perform at Pitchfork Paris and November 5 at the Icelandic Airwaves festival. On this side of the ocean she will be playing Dallas, TX’s Fair Park festival on November 12, Gasa Gasa in New Orleans on November 14 and on November 18 Adia returns to her homebase of Nashville, TN for a show at The East Room.
