Atlantic recording artist Melanie Martinez has announced plans to release her own official fragrance. Co-created by Martinez and Takasago’s New York Fine Fragrance Perfumer Catherine Selig, “Cry Baby Perfume Milk” will be available only in the continental US and exclusively sold online at crybabybottle.com from December 19th; Pre-orders are available now.
“Once I was done making my album Cry Baby, I knew I wanted to make a vintage inspired baby bottle perfume. I knew I wanted it to be a milky white and smell sweet and nostalgic. Working with Catherine Selig and Powershovel was a dream. I’m very excited for people to not only smell it but also have another piece of the Cry Baby album,” Melanie said of her new venture. Sweet and nostalgic, “Cry Baby Perfume Milk” captures the spirit of the girl who is playfully innocent, but conceals an irreverent edge. The first impression is a complicity of dark fruity notes, while strawberry milk and a lipstick accord are layered to contrast the dark fruits. The heart of, “Cry Baby Perfume Milk” invites you to experience innocent darkness while Melanie’s childhood memories are evoked through a soft, nostalgic baby lotion accord. Feminine yet mischievous and unapologetic, the base of the fragrance is wrapped in a sweet layer of burnt caramel complimented by a blend of sinister woods.
“Melanie’s love for candy, cookies and everything ‘twisted’ resulted in the perfect juxtaposition of sweet and dark” Selig said about the perfume inspiration. Even the perfume bottle, created by Melanie in collaboration with Powershovel Creative’s design team, takes on Melanie’s warped childhood aesthetic in the shape of a vintage baby bottle, complete with a classic yellow rubber top that twists off to reveal a chrome pump with a surprise message engraved. Rounding out the theme, the perfume itself is milky white, visible through a metered back panel, but sprays on clear. Bart Schmidt, fragrance agent with Brands With Purpose, partnered with Melanie’s team to introduce her Cry Baby Perfume, “Melanie Martinez truly needed to mirror her image and alter ego…she spent numerous hours smelling and wearing iterations, even on tour. The final product is a unique blend of sugar and spice…with a few twists and surprises,” he said. Not only is the scent and packaging itself uniquely Melanie, but the launch of the perfume is as well; The “Cry Baby Perfume Milk” will be the first ever fragrance directly distributed solely by a record label, via partner Atlantic Records, which is made possible by Warner Music Artist Services a division of WMG that supports Atlantic Records in all non-music brand opportunities.
