Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Perfect”?

Our new single is the start of a new season for this band. I guess you could say it’s sort of a new sound for us. We’ve been working tirelessly on new material for the last year and “Perfect” is the first step in the fearless attitude we’ve adopted as a band.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I [John] had the opening riff for a while and really wanted to do something different with it. It ended up growing into this weird R&B/reggae feel. As far as the lyrics and message go – It started off (like most songs) as a love song and then evolved into something I really wanted to communicate to all the girls that listen to our music.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We have a few different video concepts in the works, but no firm date on when we will pull the trigger.

How was the recording and writing process?

[John] It was written in my bedroom after a while of playing with the riff and then found inspiration for the message when just writing a love song didn’t seem to cut it. I’ve become quite sensitive the role social media plays in the lives of people today and specifically found my heart hurting for young women. It gave me some new purpose with my writing that I hope to keep working with. The very first demo of the track is actually

very similar to the final recording. Once we found the right groove for the song, everything pretty much fell into place.

What role does Cincinnati plays in your music?

Cincinnati has been a very interesting hometown for us. Our fanbase is phenomenally supportive, but we’ve always been a little more “mainstream” sounding than the other acts in our city and we’ve really embraced that role. Initially it seemed like we didn’t quite fit into the music scene here, which seemed like a setback, but as we grew I think it really helped to set us apart from the other acts in town.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Absolutely. This new single is just the beginning. We’re so excited for everything we’ve been working on.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

We’re hoping to get our first full length LP out early 2017. We definitely have thoughts on the title, but nothing we’re going to share just yet.

Would all the songs deal with love and being yourself?

We’re taking a lot chances with these new songs. Trying to dig deeper and bring a new level of honesty to our music. So in a sense, yes. An overlying message could be “be yourself” but every song was taken from something we’ve dealt with. So there’s a unique environment in each track.

Any plans to hit the road?

We have some awesome support slots we’re trying to land this winter and then some things we’ve started developing for 2017. You have to get out there and promote new songs, right?

What else is happening next in PUBLIC’s world?

Well there’s a remix happening with this new single which is very new territory for us. It’s a season of “firsts” for PUBLIC so we’re really excited to make that happen here soon.
