INTERVIEW: Liz Brennan

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Expected To Fly”?

Yes, the song is an uplifting but dark summer anthem. It’s about growing up and trying to hold on to who you are. Excited to finally share the video we made for this song.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wrote the chorus a year before the verses. It was about a feeling I had that I should be somewhere else in my life, further along. It’s about if you actually throw all caution to the wind, remain yourself and hopefully take off, or plummet and die. (kind of crazy but that is how I was feeling). The rest of it was inspired at my best friend’s wedding. She joined a cult that she quit shortly after, but driving home from the wedding the verses and the meaning of the song came together. It’s about friendship and trying to accept letting your friends go because they are not the same.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, we made a great video that we are releasing soon. We put it on hold so I could release my song “Body Bags:A Coffee House Song” first, which I felt needed to come out before Halloween… for obvious reasons!

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process took two years. It was tedious. When we started rehearsals for the EP we were playing the song– I was thinking, uh-oh, my best song sounds pretty bad right now. For a few minutes, I thought this song which painstakingly took two years was not a good song. Then we changed the approach and the whole thing transformed and became the song in a second. Basically once it clicks– it’s way easier than writing!

What was it like to work with Kevin Killen and how did that relationship develop?

I was searching for a producer so I could record all of the songs I wrote. I reached out to Kevin’s manager with a ridiculous NSFW video. He and the rest of the office were shocked by my song/video “MFG” and asked me to come in that day. I looked through his roster of producers- and saw that Kevin worked with many of my musical heroes. Once we started working together, I learned he had worked on two of the albums that inspired me to start singing– so I was amazed I chose him without knowing that!

How much did he get to influence the EP?

We talked about what music I like. He chose the musicians he felt went with the vibes I like…I tried to keep some control by questioning his choices and firing the drummer he chose because I didn’t like one of the singers he worked with. Then I went out with him one night and was like “Kevin, why didn’t you get this guy?!” and he was like “Lizzie, this is the guy you fired!” So he has a good ear and knows what he is talking about.

How’s your EP coming along?

That EP is all finished, but another one is now in the works!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I am hoping to release the EP at the end of the year maybe under the title “Padded Bras and Padded Walls”.

Any plans to hit the road?

I hope so! … We have a promising tour for early next year, but still waiting for that to be confirmed!

What else is happening next in Liz Brennan’s world?

Been writing the new EP, which I think is some of my best writing. I took a few weeks break from that getting a song/video & cover together for my Halloween song “Body Bags: A Coffee House Song.” The whole crazy ‘Body Bags’ project was pretty much entirely changed in the last two weeks, but very excited who got involved on it last minute and how it is coming along!
