INTERVIEW: Ben Stancombe

Hi Ben, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, I’m all good thank you not long come out of the studio so a bit tired but I’m feeling good thanks!

How’s your new album coming along?

My new album is coming along really well thank you. My team and myself have literally just decided on a name for the album last night, & I’ve never been so proud & excited to show people what I’ve been working on the past year. I think this album really defines my sound and perception as an artist. It’s very difficult trying to create your own vibe that defines you. The single ‘February’ is written about something which is fairly personal to myself, but I guess so is all the others on the record, but February for me has something which really stands out & has a real sincerity to me.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

There’s not a set date just yet, we are still in the mixing process back and forth in the studio. But hopefully will be able to pin point a release for it soon.

I understand you have been recording on Paris – how has this cosmopolitan city been influencing the sound and lyrics on this new record?

Yea that’s right, I’ve been back and forth to Paris a fair amount, it really is one of my Favorite city’s. I’m working with Sony music out there at the moment with one of their writers who has been such joy to write and work with.

I’m travelling a lot recently, and I tend to write more when I do, & out of pure coincidence I’ve found that each song so far from the album is written in a different country. The single ‘February’ was written in Croatia, also other places such as Paris, Copenhagen, Milan, Hong Kong, Venice, Dubai and more. I wasn’t intending for this to fall into place as it has, but it’s worked out as a really nice concept for the album, as it gives each song its own independence & memory for me with on how I was feeling at that time & in that part of the world.

From all the covers, what draw you to do your own rendition of “We Don’t Talk Anymore”?

What made me want to cover ‘We don’t talk anymore’ was probably how strong the song was in the first place, also me and a friend, Abi Phillips had been recently been talking about we should do a cover song / duet, then Charlie Puth and Selina Gomez released this and we loved it, so i got in the studio right away and recorded my own rendition of it and Abi was cool enough to jump on the track instantly & then we shot the video the week after which went really well.

How was the film experience?

The film experience is good, the first few takes I always class as warm up, as It does take a while to get into the mindset when you’re behind the camera. Other than that we were working with an amazing team as usual.

What have you learned from your experience sharing the stage with the likes of Paolo Nutini and Ed Sheeran?

Playing shows like that just motivates you, it really does. It makes you want to be bettering yourself more and more.

I met some really great people on the shows who I still keep in contact with and hoping to do more shows like that in the future with the new album.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! I will be hitting the road, I’m playing two exclusive shows in London where I will be trialing out some of the new material from the album, so really looking forward to that. After that I will be doing a UK tour, all main cities finishing with my home town Birmingham which is going to be such a great show for me.

What else is happening next in Ben Stacombe’s world?

Urm, I’m producing and writing lot of other artists at the moment, which I really enjoy. I get to meet some incredible singers / bands. Other than that I’m based in the studio with my team working on finishing this album!
