Hey Thanks for having me, I’ve been good. Just locked away making these tunes you know .
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Fall”?
Yeah ‘Fall’ is a dark love jam I recorded while in London. It’s special to me because I feel like it was the first time I found my sound and who I want to be sonically. Usually people would release something more uptempo but I feel like ‘Fall’ has everything you need but in slow motion.
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
A serious break up from a long time girlfriend. Just after we broke up I heard things and it seemed she was putting on a bit of a show so I wrote about it you know “you don’t fool me“.
How was the film experience?
Was great, it’s shot by a mate of mine and a very talented director from Liverpool actually. We did on a tight budget but managed to get a camera some light and a fire hot model whacked some cool effects in it and here it is. Truth be told I’m very proud of it.
The single comes off your new album Self-Medicated – what’s the story behind the title?
I am a self proclaimed “self medicator” and also I believe everyone is to be honest. It doesn’t have to be drugs, it can be music, film, coffee, cigarettes, gym or veggies – everyone self medicates in their own way so that’s what I called it.
How was the recording and writing process?
Well working with Pete is great he’s a genius and he makes it easy to get a vibe going. I also make beats and produce so when we both go in it’s always killer. In this particular session I discussed the mood and the song I wanted to do and the next minute Pete is laying down this Burning Piano vibe that was mad so I started writing my first verse and ideas for the chorus and it just came together in an afternoon ..
What role does Johannesburg plays in your music?
Of course Joburg was where I was born and where I grew up in a way so it will always be part of my angle in music, also I hope that the different sounds and rhythms have made me a decent artist. In terms of life experiences I take it from a couple different places. I high schooled in Spain on the coast near Benidorm actually, and trust me that was a story on its own so many experiences and times an places influence me.
What aspect of your life did you get to explore on this album?
Definitely the darker side, a bit of Sex, Drugs and Stoner Pop if you will.I always hope to be a commentator for my peers and whoever cares, really it’s just about what I do, feel and think…
Any plans to hit the road?
Right now I would call them ideas or ambitions nothing solid yet but definitely in the near future I would love to be hitting the road. Take my sound to the streets.
What else is happening next in Ross Jack’s world?
In the words of many a villain .. but with an insecure twist … Hopefully world domination haha!
