Electrifying soul / folk group The Midnight Pine have just released their much anticipated third studio album, The Midnight Pine, via The Redwoods Music. The record is the follow up to 2014’s Buried record – hailed by KCRW as an “album of the year” – and features current single “Vice.” The Southern California group recently premiered a mesmerising video for “Vice” via PopMatters, which fans can check out here. Guitarist Matthew Molarius had this to say about the video’s subtle psychedelia:
“The video came together pretty quickly. We blacked out a corner of our rehearsal space and shot everyone individually. All the psychedelic colors and cuts are courtesy of our videography guru, Blake Raynor of the Kakalak Collective.”
The Midnight Pine is already garnering favorable reviews. Roots blog Mother Church Pew called the record “cinematically dreamy,” while PopMatters called it a “delicious stew of psych, soul, and folk.” Fans can purchase the record in a variety of formats here.
The band had this to say about the new record: “It’s been an incredible process to see this album through from concept to completion. The Midnight Pine has evolved from a stripped down acoustic based ensemble rooted in americana to this 7-piece capable of new dynamics and few limitations, it’s been exciting to both watch and actively sculpt. It feels good to have made a solid album that moves almost seamlessly through disparate genres, there’s an art to that itself.”
To celebrate the release of the record, the band will be performing at the Joshua Tree Music Festival this Saturday (10.8) and a hometown Halloween show at the Music Box in San Diego on 10.28.
