INTERVIEW: Sydney Ranee

Hi Sydney, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey VENTS, I’ve been great. Busy traveling South America singing on a cruise ship. We are currently in Mexico and headed for Peru.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “17″?

17 is a feel good track. It’s about living your life care free just like we did at 17. I secretly wish I could go back to that age. No bills, no worries just stress free. 17 is written and produced by me.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I was inspired by just everyday life. Sometimes I find myself complaining about the simple things and this song is a reminder to just let loose and have fun. It’s about owning whatever moment comes your way.

How was the film experience?

It’s always a pleasure shooting with Noah Ruderman. He shot my first video “You Could” so I just had to have him back for 17. He’s very talented with the camera and full of ideas. We just wanted to have fun with 17 and we did just that.

The single comes off your new album You Could – what’s the story behind the title?

You Could is inspired by my boyfriend. I’m 27 now and I feel like before meeting him I was constantly kissing frogs lol. The story is that you are willing to fight and so whatever it takes to build this relationship because this person is so special.

How was the recording and writing process?

Funny you asked that. I actually wrote all the songs in my tiny cabin while I was working on a cruise ship. Once I finally went on vacation I hired musicians including Matteo and we recorded it at Blue Dream Studios in Los Angeles. This was my first time producing a record and I am just so overjoyed with the outcome.

What role does LA plays in your music?

LA is always home for me and because it has a very big music scene I always find myself inspired by the musicians I come across and by everyday life. LA is such a cool city and has this vibe that no other city has which just constantly inspires me. I love to go to Venice Beach and write.

Does acting influence your music and the other way around?

Yes it does in a way. When I was in college I picked up an acting course to help with my stage presence and it has improved a lot. There’s nothing worse than getting on stage and not being able to interact and get comfortable with the audience. Acting also helps with music videos and helps me portray my story better.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

It all depends for “17” I found inspiration from just longing to be carefree. Sometimes I have to remind myself not to get all worked up and just enjoy life. “You Could” was inspired by boyfriend and is about fighting for your love. “Difference” was inspired by the death of one of my favorite artists Prince. He was very vocal about the Black Lives Matter movement and I felt like it was my time to share and be vocal about it as well.

Any plans to hit the road?

Well I am always on the road better yet on the sea. Once I wrap up this contract on the cruise ship I would like to do a mini tour maybe starting in the west coast. Then in January I head to Italy and hopefully set up some gigs there.

What else is happening Sydney Ranee’s world?

Hmmm… currently I’ve been obsessing over Solange’s new album #aseatatthetable. It’s so fresh and funky. Also, I’m planning on shooting a cover of one her tunes soon. Right now I’m in Hualtuco, Mexico just catching some rays!!
