Following our premiere week, we are moving away from the electronic rock to something more folky in the veins of Bob Dylan and Bon Iver as Bring Prudence teams up with VENTS for premiere of his music video for “Red Horses”, the title track off his upcoming album released on September 23rd and featuring Jared Van Fleet (Beirut, Sparrow House, Voxtrot) on piano, bass, shakers, and handclaps.
Bring Prudence’s first full-length album is a product of Sparrow Night – a weekly workshop held by Oleh and his friends in the kitchen of their Crown Heights apartment where they motivate each other to make art on a regular basis. Each Sunday, Oleh brought in a brand new song to be critiqued by his roommates, friends, and other local artists. The result – Red Horses – is a cohesive collection of intimate moments, stories, and quips, all carrying the same thread.
Oleh recorded Red Horses in his bedroom with a 10-year-old USB microphone and a laptop – mixing, mastering, and producing the album along the way. One day, Oleh played the album to his friend Jared van Fleet (Beirut, Voxtrot, Sparrow House), who had the idea of layering in a soft cushion of piano, bass, and percussion. What was originally conceived as a stark acoustic record grew into its own with Jared’s attuned and intuitive ear.
Red Horses is an album of seduction, alienation, and loss of innocence. While not a concept album, it employs a cast of characters and makes frequent allusions to theater, fortune-telling, and 90’s pop culture. Much of the record is autobiographical, supplemented by childhood lore, altered memories, and dreams taken to their most absurd conclusion.
Oleh moved to Illinois from Ukraine when he was 13. As a way to cope with isolation, he started writing poems and recording songs into his cell phone. By 16, he had saved up enough money from his Dunkin Donuts job to buy a guitar.
After playing in several bands (You Can’t Go To The Restaurant Like This, Pursued By a Bear, Win Win, Bad Bad Hats), Oleh started his own intimate and intricate project – Bring Prudence. Oleh self-released a series of EP’s (When In Doubt, Eat Red, Engineers, Aliens), earning praise on The Current, BIRP, Indie Rock Cafe, Recent Music Heroes, Echolalia Radio, and The Bomarr Blog. He’s shared the bill with Sanjaya, Queen Kwong, and Charlie Brand of Miniature Tigers.
Oleh’s full-length debut will be released on September 23, 2016 on his own label Brilliant Green Records. After delving into maximal chamber pop, he will explore the opposite side of the spectrum, distilling his songwriting down to its core elements.
