Hi Clay, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Great! Thank you so much for having me.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Wildthing/3’s A Crowd”?
Yes… This is my first release EVER, I’m very excited.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The songs were inspired by different things and I strung them together while writing a video concept. Wildthing was sparked by a day that I was particularly frustrated by social media and came across a selfie with the hashtag “wildthing” underneath it. The lyrics just starting pouring out after that. 3’s A Crowd shares more of my inner, private life. Inspired by heartbreak and a person who I always let back in to my life no matter what they do.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes! Some very talented friends and I created a visual narrative to accompany these tunes, featuring the beautiful young model, Laneya Grace. It came out just as I imagined it in my head, which is a crazy, incredible feeling.
The single comes off your new album, The Clay Project: Chapter 1 – what’s the story behind the title?
The first Chapter is titled: When Night Falls. It’s the first part of a two part project/EP of sorts. It features some of my heavier, moodier songs.
Would it be a concept record?
Yes, definitely and I hope to create more visuals to accompany the songs.
Would Ch. 2 follow the same themes as this one?
Chapter 2: When Day Breaks, features some of my more lighthearted songs, expressing some happier feelings and vibes.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was great. I feel really lucky to have worked with all kindhearted, trustworthy people who really care about me and my music.
How does your other artistic background get to influence your music and the other way around?
I think that being an artist you should never be limited to one medium. While singing and songwriting is my preferred medium to share with the world, I am constantly doing other creative things to influence my music. Drawing, painting, collaging and writing anything other than songs, just helps get creative juices flowing. I think it’s essential to break routine and explore all different aspects of creativity (even if you feel like you’re “not good” at something).
What aspects of love and equality did you get to explore in this album?
Love and equality are my constant crusades. Self-love specifically. By being unabashedly myself, and loving who I am and who I am becoming everyday, I hope to influence others to do the same. My dream is to create a safe space, a community of people, who can come as they are, who are treated equally with love and learn to value and cherish themselves and their experiences. This two-part project/EP is just the first step on the journey to creating that space. It shares my inner feelings, musings, thoughts, stories and I try to be as honest and open as possible.
Any plans to hit the road?
Hopefully in the near future, some things are cooking…
What else is happening next in CLAY’s world?
I am just continuing to write and create every day. I have some more releases coming up and plan to play more shows and write more songs (for both myself and hopefully soon for others).
