INTERVIEW: Singer-Songwriter Alex Di Leo

Hi Alex, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey! Thanks so much for reaching out! Everything’s been great. Just had a show at Stache in downtown Fort Lauderdale last night..it was definitely my favorite show of the year so far. Great way to get into the weekend lol.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Make it Easier”?

Of course! “Make it Easier” is actually more of a debut track than a single lol. I only released on SoundCloud so it won’t be available for purchase until the whole EP is out, on Nov. 4th.

Make it easier is about a young love and their carefree life together. I find that life today is always on the go.  I think it’s important to slow down, not overthink everything. To dream and wonder about possibilities of your future life.

I think so far people really seem to like the uplifting spirit vibe and the lyrics.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Rather than a particular event I think it was a series of things that I came to realize over the last few years..a combination of things is what inspired me to write the song. Taking chances, loving something or someone with everything you’ve got and as passionately as possible, and doing your best as staying as young as you can.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I’ll most likely only release a lyric video for this one.

The single comes off your new album So We Go – what’s the story behind the title?

So we go is about falling in love when you first laid eyes on them. Continuously wanting to feel that same way you did when the “stars first collided” and there was that magical spark. A feeling only the two of you share together and taking a chance on possibly one of the greatest adventures of your life.

How was the recording and writing process?

I had written most of the songs, if not 80% of most of them before going into the studio. I actually had recorded “Reason” and “Waking Up” with a different producer previously. Although I wasn’t too satisfied with the production on those recordings it had some instrumental elements that helped inspire similar ideas in the newer versions. Josh’s recording studio is made out of wood from a barn that was torn apart near his home out west years ago. It’s very cozy, which for me helps with the creative process.

What was it like to work with Josh Diaz and how did that relationship develop?

I met Josh in October of 2015. I was shooting a live music video for my song “Reason” and needed a band to back me up. The film production company had recommended him. After the shoot we realized that we should do some more work together so we started practicing in his studio once or twice a week.

In January of 2016 we decided to record a few songs and after that batch was completed we did another three completing the EP at the beginning of June.

Working with Josh is one of the greatest blessings I’ve had as a solo artist. We both have a very similar mind when it comes to creating music..but different enough to where we through out crazy ideas too each other..some agreeing on other’s not. We had such a great time during the two productions that in the middle of Summer we dove into some more..which we can talk about soon..

How much did he get to influence the album?

Josh had a great influence on the album. Some of the ideas he had to create certain sounds really helped set the tone of the EP.

How has your previous musical background have influence your new music?

A few years ago I used to be in more of a hard rock band that had more of a Foo Fighters vibe. Towards the end of it the sound started leaning a little more alternative rock because of my inspirations of groups like ColdPlay, Snow Patrol..etc. Part of the reason the group ended was because of our differences in music taste.

What did you learn from the past three years that get to inspire the lyrics on this record?

In the past 3 years I’ve really realized how short life is and how overthinking things most of the time is unnecessary, go with your gut. If you love something or someone, love them with everything you’ve got and as passionately as possible. And stay young as much as you possibly can. I also took great inspiration from a relationship that changed my life for the better..shes is a huge part of this record.

Any plans to hit the road?

Of course there are definitely plans to hit the road in the near future but as of right now we’re looking at after the first quarter in 2017, possibly before.

What else is happening next in Alex Di Leo’s world?

I’m releasing a single next Tuesday, Sept. 27th, “I’ve Been Waiting.” It’s got a very feel good, makes you wanna dance vibe. Definitely looking forward to everyone’s thoughts on it. I also filmed a music video this past weekend for the last track on the EP, “Waking Up.” Such a great time working with director/producer Josiah Sampson. I can’t wait to share it with you guys.
