Hey VENTS. I’m wonderful, thanks for asking and thank you for the interview. Currently sitting outdoors in Iran under warm rays of sunshine that pour down on me and my insane Doberman.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “A Thousand Tangled Lies”?
It’s a song built on my own experience with pressure and letting go of the hyper critic.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It was a culmination of feeling helpless and anxious that led to deep self exploration and ultimate release in song form. Societal and commercial pressures started making me feel I needed more (both personally and in a material sense) and it took away from my peace and presence. The song began as an exploration and analysis and ended as my closure.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I want to say yes. But I won’t say yes yet.
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording and writing process unfolded quite quickly for this one (trust me that never happens with me). We did a few vocal takes but ended up using the first one.
Your music has this very cinematic vibe and I know your music has been featured in lots of TV series – so makes me wonder, do you always write with a film score approach?
Thank you. It’s funny because I actually don’t watch TV and only recently started watching more films. We didn’t have a tv growing up and I would either practice piano or play video games for fun, so writing music to picture was never something I thought about and that’s still the case. I guess I’m drawn to a writing style that serves well for TV/Film (I love writing lush string arrangements and believe every piece should have a climax) and I’m super grateful those qualities are considered cinematic.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Definitely. More songs to come as well as a debut full length album in 2017.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Yes and yes but I’ll get back to you when those are all finalized <3
Any plans to hit the road?
What else is happening next in nilu’s world?
Other than writing music and over analyzing everything, I’m working on getting resources/clothes/vitamins/etc. to different charities and relief orgs in the Middle East. I’m in Iran right now and I come here pretty often so if anyone has anything at all they’d like to donate (clothes, hair ties, literally anything), I encourage you to please get in contact with me via my websitewww.nilumusic.com. Thanks again for the interview and I hope we chat again soon, VENTS!
