Hi Dipha, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
I’m good! I’m just busy currently touring for my single, No One Can Stop Us, around Asia, and, working on my 2nd single and a couple of club tracks.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “No One Can Stop Us”?
No one can stop us is my debut single with my good friend, who is also a talented singer, Kalulla. The song is about positive vibrations. I sampled Indonesian traditional instruments and mixed it with current electronic dance music sounds.
And I’m quite surprised it is all over radio stations and clubs in Southeast Asia. Hopefully all over the world. Mark Ronson came to Jakarta and played that track. I was surprised!
Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?
First, it was based on personal experience. How I had to fight against a lot of obstacles that was happening in my life that time. But, in the middle of writing the lyrics, I decided to create a more positive song, and sending energetic vibes to the future listeners.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
As of this moment, I released a lyric video for my single so people would memorize the lyrics as well as catching the message I was trying to deliver.
How was the recording and writing process?
It took me two years to finally have this single ready, because we had to work with my and Kalulla’s packed schedule. But during those two long years, we were able to produce a lot of creations. And at the end of 2015, we chose No One Can Stop Us as my debut single.
When I was DJ-ing outside of the city of Jakarta, like Sumatra, or Bali, I also did some field recording with traditional instruments and composed it with the song, so this song would be authentic Indonesian dance music with influences of modern dance and pop music.
What was it like to work with Kallula and how did that relationship develop?
I have a good relationship with her, like the kind of relationship a singer would have with her music producer. She helped me write the lyrics. I met her a while back when I was creating a commercial jingle and she was one of the singers that were chosen to sing the jingle.
How much did she get to influence the song?
Kalulla dedicated so much great energy to this song. Her unique voice gave good vibes.
What role does Indonesia plays in your music?
Indonesia plays a big role in my single, No One Can Stop Us. I got a million views on youtube and a million plays on Spotify, and, also, the single made it to the top charts on a lot of radio and TV stations in Indonesia.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes! My second single will be released this November. I am collaborating with another Indonesian artist, and it will have Indonesian subtlety mixed with current electronic sounds.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Maybe in November.
Any plans to hit the road?
I am currently touring Indonesia, Singapore, and Shanghai. Maybe I’ll be coming back to the US in November this year.
What else is happening next in Dipha Barus’s world?
I’m releasing my second single that is a little more to the pop genre soon, and touring around Asia. While I’m doing that, I will be releasing a couple of club tracks.
