INTERVIEW: Josh Michaels

Hi Josh, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

This week I have been very focused on promoting my new E.P. Out of the Deep Blue. Alongside my P.R. help, I enjoy being hands-on with my own releases. I am an independent artist; I do not have any labels (helping) backing me. I have been very focused on my marketing as well as my craft.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Awaken Now”?

Awaken Now is a track I wrote for people stuck in bad friendships, relationships – anything holding them down.

This song is meant to remind them of the light ahead and the need to let go of what’s keeping them back. We all deserve to awaken into freedom and have peace of mind.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

I wrote this song based off of an experience I viewed. I had a friend who was verbally abused by her boyfriend for many years. I taught her what she is worth and to let go of him and find the light.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I do have plans to produce a music video for Awaken Now.  Over the next 3-4 months I will be working on it.

The single comes off your new album Out Of The Deep Blue – what’s the story behind the title?

I came up with the title ” Out of the Deep Blue, ” by realizing that we all must get out of high waters, we all deserve that peace.  I mention this over and over again in my lyrics.  Don’t let the small things in life get you down.  Fly like a bird.

How was the recording and writing process?

Out of the Deep Blue was written based off life experiences to help others with their own life experience. Each song is meant to open all hearts and minds. I write based off of that universal message and for all people to link on. Sound-related – I personally never like to stick with one sound; each song holds a different flavour.

What role does NY plays in your music?

I have lived in New York my entire life. Many people tell me I should be living in Los Angeles because of the music scene and the belief that you need to be there to ‘make it’. That is a false belief.  I have many friends who have moved there thinking that they need to be there for their music success. I know from experience that it is not the place you live, it is the work that you put into your music and your network.

Do you take a different approach when you are writing for someone else than when you are writing for your own music?

When writing for others, I use the same formula.  It is all about finding universal messages and creating ways for the audience to use my lyrics for any given situation on their mind at that moment.

What aspects of hope did you get to explore on this record?

The goal is always to connect with all people listening through my song and word.  I want my music to give people lots of hope within their lives.

Any plans to hit the road?

At the moment I have no scheduled tour.  I am extremely focused on this EP and getting it out to the masses.

What else is happening next in Josh Michaels’ world?

Currently I am writing with other terrific artists.  I am very excited to announce those projects in the near future.
