Ethan Burns, premiered the visual for “Homeward”, the lead single off of his upcoming 22 Knots EP due out later this year on Fairfax Recordings, today with My Old Kentucky Blog. In this video, we see an eclectic array of timeless americana displayed through vintage-y warm footage that perfectly captures the sort of retro soul that has caused such a stir around the 25-year-old California troubadour. You can also check out the audio for “Homeward” on Soundcloud, which reached #6 on the Hype Machine charts and has been getting radio attention everywhere from NPR to KCRW to WXPN.
Ethan Burns debut EP, 22 Knots, is a beautiful collection of diverse, warm funk and singer/songwriter ballads that calls to mind Van Morrison, Leon Bridges & Nathaniel Rateliff while bringing something extra that is both engaging and inherently unique. Consequence of Sound put it best when they described Ethan’s sound as “fitting perfectly blasting from the windows in a Brooklyn neighborhood circa 1962 as kids are opening up the fire hydrants in the streets to cool off on a hot summer day”.
In addition to “Homeward”, the EP’s title track is also currently available for stream on Soundcloud. “22 Knots” is a “brooding tale of my youth” as Ethan describes it. The track perfectly captures a ‘night on the beach’ aesthetic that is intimately familiar to Ethan having grown up in the Central Coast region of California. Like “Homeward”, the track has been getting significant attention from tastemakers in the radio and blog world alike.
Other than the occasional few bars of the blues he would catch coming from the garage while his father worked on the family car, Ethan Burns was brought up exclusively on gospel music. At the age of thirteen, Ethan got his first glimpse of rock & roll when he caught the video for Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on television. Over the next few days, he would learn to play the song by sight alone; no small feat for a young man who had only recently picked up a guitar. That natural proclivity for songwriting is something Ethan still exercises today, often flipping through the radio and learning new songs by ear upon first listen.
Ethan will be making his NYC debut on September 6th as part of the Communion Music Residency Series at Rockwood Music Hall. You can get more details on that performance on the Rockwood website and please stay tuned for more news and tour dates from Ethan as we approach his EP release date!
